AR- 15 or AR-10?

AR- 15 or AR-10? - 11/14/17 12:00 AM

I've never had any desire to own either but now I'm wanting one.

I love 30 caliber guns but don't know if it's worth the effort buying a 308 or 300 Blackout in an AR platform. I'll definitely be predator hunting with whatever I get and I'm sure I'll shoot a deer or two with it just as a novelty but it'll mainly be a defense/predator hunting gun. I've looked at just about everything on the net and factory guns are high but I like the FN SCAR series and Sig ARs.

Buy it or build it? I'm not familiar with AR platforms at all but it seems like building one is a good bit cheaper than buying a factory gun.

One of each! Then buy an 300BO upper.

Kinda like asking half ton or 3/4 ton, both trucks but each have pros and cons.

If you want to build there are plenty of detailed YouTube videos that can walk someone through it.

AR10s are heavy if you will be on the move a lot. AR15 is a ton lighter and can be had in some pretty potent rounds. AR15 parts and accessories are quite a bit cheaper for the most part too. I have both but my 10 is a shooting house gun only.

AR15 in .223, 1/7 twist. lighter, compact, and you can still reach coyotes a long way off ...

I absolutely love my 300 blackout. I have sold all my ar10's. I like them but I like my 308 in a bolt gun. My 300 does great on stuff within 200yds. If you want to use an ar15 but still reach out and touch something, a 6.5 grendel with 20" barrel is the ticket. Maybe when the 277 wolverine picks up more steam it will fill that role but right now grendel is good.

AR 10 is going to be a lot heavier.

And the 300 Blackout is just a 30 cal upper on the AR15 lower.

I had an AR10 and hunted with it a couple of times. It weighed around 13/14lbs. Killed a doe with it and sold it.

Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF) has the Revolution line of 308 piston driven carbines that weigh just over 7lb. https://pof-usa.com/revolution/
They are pricey but are really good guns and very accurate. I had a P-308 several years ago but it was 9 plus pounds. The Revolution will be my next AR

I need to get down there and let you shoot my AR15 in 6.5 Grendel. It will make you forget about a .308 Hank.

6.5 Grendel would be a good option.

Wrong - My DPMS G2 in 308 is the same size as a AR-15 and weighs 7lbs. laugh

Would depend on what I was wanting to do with it. Varmit hunting I would want the AR-15, deer hunting the AR-10. Yes, you can kill a deer with a .223 or 5.56 but it doesn't have the FPE of a .308. In a handful of states, it's illegal to deer hunt with a .223.

There are better caliber choices in the AR10 platform too, IMO, but I don't own one.

There's way more caliber options available for the AR15

I've got a 6.5 grendel that I really like. I'd look into the grendel or 6.8 in the ar platform. The thing that made me go with the grendel was how cheap you can buy bulk ammo for. Ive found grendek bulk 100 grain steel case for under 25cents/round

The only reason to go with 300 blackout is if you plan on suppressing it or building an ar pistol/sbr

Re: AR- 15 or AR-10? - 12/06/17 09:52 AM

300 blk shines as a suppressed subsonic slinger in a short-barreled configuration. But that isn't the only reason to consider it. 300 blk shares everything but the barrel with your 5.56 if you already have one. Has around a 30% increase in energy over 5.56 at all barrel lengths. Has options, though pricey, that will expand down to very low velocities. Is very effective for killing at the most typical hunting ranges (50-150 yards).
I skipped over the 6.8 and went straight to the 6.5 Grendel for my longer range work. I would not hesitate to shoot a deer at 500 yards with my Grendel if presented the opportunity.

For a Lightweight, deer rig it’s hard to beat the 6.8 in an AR 15. It gets most of its performance in short barrels, and you can have an accurate, 300 yard deer AR that’s under 6#, or less, if you want. Nothing wrong with other calibers, but I’ve got all sorts and can/do build all sorts, and I carry and kill deer with a 6.8 usually. If I was worried about shooting beyond 300, I’d go straight to the 6.5CM AR, or a bolt gun. The longer bullets usable in the 6.5 are better suited than the constraints of the Grendel...to me. I just enjoy a short, light gun when getting in and out of vehicles and stands. I just don’t see any need for the non-standard AR10 for 95% of deer hunting. The Grendel can do it in a short, light package, also. It just isn’t quite as efficient in the shorter tubes, but it’s splitting hairs inside 300.
