Replacing a gun stock

I'm looking at some point replacing the stock on my wby vanguard 257. Don't I need to take it to a gun smith to bed it and what not?

I haven't. I usually do my own. Not hard at all.

A good trick for heavy barrels or any for that matter when opening up the channel on the stock is - I use a dowel rod wrapped in sand paper to get the correct fit.

I think you would be better off putting the money towards a Mark V

You can find used MK V's a LOT cheaper than that. Especially the bead blasted black models.

That one I sent you last week was $1800 and then steal the scope off your Vanguard for the time being.

Much more realistic than a $5,000 purchase.

There a lot of stocks out there that have aluminum bedding in them and are drop in ready. Just check and see if it tells you anything about the bbl channel or call and ask the mfgr

Put the stock on and shoot it first; if it performs well, leave it alone.

No you don't need a gunsmith, many reputable stock makers build prefit stocks, I have a bell and Carlson on mine it's about a $250 stock, check on redhawkrifles.com for a good selection.

I think weatherby used bell & Carlson on the mark v rifles.

I don't know if they are. But if not they're really similar

My vanguard s2 range certified came with a bell & Carson green web stock

The MK V uses a B&C stock. I had to replace one a while back and got it cheaper direct from B&C rather than buying from Weatherby as a dealer.

If you go the B&C route, you will not need to bed the action.

If you just want a wood or synthetic stock that requires bedding, it's not hard, just use plenty of release agent and plug ALL holes, nooks and crannies with modeling clay. Once you plug everything up and apply the release agent until you think everything is covered, coat it all again.
