Rifle Stocks

Thinking about fixing something that's not broken. Looking at putting synthetic stock on my old Remington with either a Grayboe Outlander or Bell and Carlson Medalist Alaskan II. I know the Grayboe is newer stock but hoping someone out there has some real life experience with it. It gets good reviews by a lot of writers but they play with things for a few weeks, I'm hoping for someone with some trigger time with one. There is only about $3-4 in cost between them. I will listen to any input I can get.

I have B&C Medalist on several M700 and a Model Seven. I love them.

What cartridge? I recently put a B&C Medalist on a Browning A Bolt .338 Win Mag (not for deer, before the too dead mob attacks). I know felt recoil is somewhat subjective, but this was like adding a muzzle break. It is a solid stock (not hollow like the A Bolt OEM), with full length aluminum bedding block and a Pachmayr recoil pad. These factors combined with the bore/stock alignment really reduced the felt recoil. Whether it's is that, or the stock itself, my groups were much tighter with this stock.

The dark gray with black webbing looks good with the stainless action/barrel, and gives the durable combo I was after for this rifle. It comes with sling swivels installed, and was drop in ready. I did some minor sanding to the channel just to ensure free floating, but probably wasn't even necessary.

If you are looking for a lightweight set up, this is probably not a great choice. For the same reasons it tames the .338 bite, it's a bit heavier than other options.

Yea,if you want light weight get a McMillan Edge fill. You can also save about $100 by getting it through 24hourcampfire.

Those are really light. I ordered one, and it actually felt too light for me. Seems like it was only about 1.5ish lbs. (on digital fish scale, so not exact). Returned it and got the standard fill. Still not heavy, bit felt like it balanced better for me.

B&C stocks are a good value, but they are too thick in the grip for me. The grayboe stocks are more slender in the grip and are nice stocks. I've handled a few, but never shot a rifle wearing one. JMHO

Thanks for the reply guys. Its a blued 30-06. Recoil is not really an issue and not super concerned with weight, but don't want it too heavy. I have been looking at olive with black webbing.

Did you handle them in a store? If so, where? What did you think of the quality?

I just got finished putting a B&C Sporter on my old Savage 116 and so far love it.

Yes I handled them in a store and at a gun show. Remington now offers this stock on a model that they introduced earlier this year, I believe it is called the Alaskan model but i'm not sure. Mark's Outdoors had 4 in stock a couple of months ago, now they only have one. The stock on this model is dark brown with black webbing.

The guns I handled at a show ere the benchrest models that were installed on a custom gun. I liked these stocks also and are a great value when compared to a comparable McMillian or Manners stock, which will cost more than twice as much.

I may have missed it, but looking at their website I couldn't find and answer I was looking for....Do the Grayboe stocks have an aluminum internal bed block? If so is it full length or just in the receiver area?

I never had one of those brands but I really like the Houge I put on my Remington.

gundoc, I don't believe they have an internal bed block. I think I read where they only have pillars.

Thanks, Dixiepatriot. I have put Hogue stocks on shoguns in the past and have always been happy with the results.

Remington was running a sale on stocks last week; I picked up an H-S Precision stock which was the model on their 5R rifles for just over $200. It is green with black webbing and has a full length aluminum bedding block. Just got it on the rifle this afternoon and hopefully will try it out if the rain leaves tomorrow. Its a little heavy and thick in the grip if that matters to you, but miles ahead of the plastic junk that came on the VSF. They had others, but no B&C in the sale.
