Bigger stuff? - 03/26/17 08:31 PM
Not to derail the .338 thread, let's say the state opens black bear season and we have 375lb bucks&200lb does to bring the pain. Would you buy a bigger rifle caliber wise?

Probably not but it would give me an excuse to shoot my 35 Whelen more.

I like a big boom. Always have. When I was in the 8th grade I got a 44 magnum Ruger Redhawk and a Stevens single shot 10 ga. I never had a 30-30 or a .243. First rifle was a Remington model 600 .308. Fast forward to now my main go to rifles are a 45-70 and a .338 ultra magnum.
So back to your question I'd rather have too much gun than too little.

No,I would hunt anything except brown bear with a 270. i have a 7 mag but it isn't needed. I could also hunting anything except brown bear with my 7-08.
Buy a .375 H & H and call it a day. If you can't kill it with that, it can't be killed.

No...I reckon near about every species on the planet has been killed with a .308 before, and that's good enough for me.

No need to buy anything bigger. I already have 2 338 WM's and a 375 H & H so i'm ready for the steroid deer invasion.

Why i put bear in the mix for "Dangerous Game". I seem to remember John Wooters or Gary Sitton writing of hunting black bear with a .240 Wby. I would look into the .338 Federal or .338-06 if we had bigger game.

.358 Winchester, .35 Whelen, .338 Federal, .338-06 are also some favorites of mine that will do it all and at reasonable distances. They do good on deer as well. Around here where you can't shoot that far anyway if we had elk and bears, etc. those would be the good ones. They are the non-magnums. Which is really in name only.
.35 Rem is a heck of a good black bear cartridge. and 45/70 will stop anything I'm convinced but both are more limited in range.

as long as we're dreaming: .318 rimless nitro express. loooong 250-grain bullet at 2,400 fps. chambered in a 98 mauser-based rifle, of course ...

I'm pretty sure the '06 will handle anything I'll ever hunt.
