.303 British (7.7x56R for European Metric types) does best with medium speed powders and 150-174 grainers.Keep ranges moderate and it's a killer of things. It's older than BhamFred too.

I really like them. Initially designed with stopping a cavalry charge. 30-06 comparison, heavy bullet, rimmed cartridge, used all over the world and still in use in some backwoods places today. Standard British Infantry round up until the mid 1950s, was the primary rifle for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police up until a few years ago. If not worn out the SMLE (Short magazine lee Enfield) series and the No1 MKIV
are some of the most proven combat rifles in the world.

Thanks for all the comments. So I should go kill one deer or coyote open-sights and all, then put it back in the safe?

handloading is the best way to get the best out of your .303. if your rifle is a smle or no. 4 mk 1, it will feed roundnose bullets just fine as well as spire ponts. if it's a p14 (.303 version of the american model 1917 in .30-06), it will feed only spire points. i killed my best buck with hand loaded hornady 150-grain .311 spire point, running abut 2,650 FPS, out of a sporterized p14 ...

Its not hard to find. Usually in the $25 per box range, 180g soft points. Surplus used to be cheap but its all gone now. Recommend stay away from the Pakistani surplus. As mentioned, is best to reload for it. Privi (Serbian) makes a great FMJ round at about $19 a box.

Only if you really don't like them.
