Rem. 700 SPS in 7mm-08... pros/cons? - 12/20/16 11:59 PM
Alright gun guru's, I've found a really nice Remington model 700 in 7mm-08 that I plan to get right after Christmas. I've killed deer with a 700 before (borrowed for a hunt), and found no fault at all with it. Can anyone tell me why I would NOT want to get one? A buddy of mine tells me they are one of the best bolt guns made. What do you guys think?

The Rem 700 action is a good one. That SPS stock isn't. I'd look at eventually changing it out, but it should be a good shooter in a good caliber.

Most of them will shoot better than average. I'm not a fan of anything The Freedom Group manufactures these days, though. You can buy a Vanguard/ Howa 1500 or a Savage for the same money or less and have better quality, in my opinion.

I would buy it with no worries. I don't like the stock on them, however, I don't like most factory stocks from any manufacturer. I bought my Dad a M700 30-06 a couple years ago and that joker will cloverleaf 165 grain Accubonds at 100 yards.

No downside to it if the price is good and you like it IMO.
7mm08 is a great caliber and my SPS's I have no complaints with after I throw a Timney in.

I have owned around 6 "new" Remington rifles over the last 2-3 years and mounted scoped/sighted in countless others. I am still waiting to find the junk that some folks say Remington is producing these days. I would buy it and not worry about it. The SPS stock isn't the greatest, but it's light and everyone I have owned/shot would shoot sub MOA groups even with the SPS stock.
I will say, the X mark pro trigger sucks though, as does the "blued" finish Remington put on everything, but as far as shooting, I doubt you notice any difference in a 700 or Mark V Weatherby. Either of them will out shoot most shooters.

My oldest son has that exact gun. My only complaint is that the SPS finish will rust if the weatherman even predicts a rain. It's a common issue with the SPS line, but other than that, it shoots very well. 140 grain Federal Fusions have performed great for us. CD.

Is that the one with the heavier than sporter barrel?
Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it except
Needs a new stock.
Needs a new trigger.
Needs a new finish.
Dependent upon my first question, it may be heavier than necessary.
