do y'all .270 shooters prefer shooting deer DRT?

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/18/15 10:23 PM

When I hunted with a .270 I used 150gr and never had any bad results

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/18/15 10:23 PM

I've been shooting 140 grain SST in my 270 Win. I've been thinking about dropping down to a 130 grain Partition or Accubond. Or maybe going with a 140 grain Accubond. Not sure which weight is better, though.

130gr Nosler Partition, best of all worlds....

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/18/15 11:25 PM

I like 130 accubonds

130-140gr is the happy zone for a .270

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/19/15 08:58 AM

140gr.

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/19/15 11:28 AM

I used to shoot 130's but got tiny entry and exit holes and the deer ran way farther than what i liked. My stepdad had the same problem with 130's and went up to 150's and he said he never had one run after he switched. For me I switched to a 7 mag shooting 140 Accubonds and have not had one run at all yet.

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/19/15 02:02 PM

Personally, I would just test some and shoot whatever the gun liked best. I think it matters a lot more where you hit them and on the particular deer than it does on the difference of 20 grains of bullet weight.

I do think you will have better success on a marginal shot with a bullet that stays together. I love the Federal Fusion bullets in 150 grn from my 270.

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/20/15 01:12 PM

if you reload Nosler is coming out with or already came out with a 150 grain high BC bullet.

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/20/15 02:01 PM

Berger 140 has a BC of.487 AND the new berger 150s are .531 BC. As far as I know the 150 Bergers are the highest BC in the 277 bullet range UNLESS you go custom lathe built bullets thumbup

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/20/15 02:51 PM

the reason for going to a higher weight bullet should be for better penetration. Inside 400 yards BC don't mean squat, but higher velocity does mean a flatter flight path. So ya go with a premium bullet at lower weights and higher velocities. Flat shooting AND deeper penetration.

140sst
110 vmax

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/20/15 07:07 PM

140/150, will shoot flatter at longer ranges AND penetrate better. Try picking up a light rock and seeing how far you can throw it. Now do it with a slightly heavier one and see what happens. Heavier weights will simply carry the mail better.

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/20/15 08:47 PM

a 140/150 will NOT shoot flatter to 400 yards than a 130.

That is true. 600 yards or less VELOCITY always beats BC> BUT your arguement is over mere inchs! 270 caliber 130 Berger 3200 fps drops 15 inchs at 400 yards. 140 gr berger at 3100 fps drops 16.5 inchs at 400 yards. AND 150gr berger at 3000 fps drops 18 inchs at 400 yards. All ballistic I posted are off Exball Ballistics Program. BAsicly a 130 drops 3 inchs less at 400 yards than a 150. BUT the 150 has 1834 ftlbs of knock down to the 130s 1688 ftlbs of knockdown. So does it really matter? NOT REALLY. 3 inchs flatter OR 150 ftlbs more knockdown DOESNOT REALLY MATTER THAT MUCH!!!!! You know now the facts, argur on if you want. rofl

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/21/15 12:25 PM

I have seen ballistic charts that show the 150 shoots "flatter" than a 130...but they changed the zero range to get it.....still ain't flatter.

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/21/15 12:38 PM

MY ballistics that I listed were, 50 yard zero , with 2 inch bore height. Those where the numbers I posted. 0 at 50 yards is usually 1 inch high at 100 yards. I do the = 50 yard zero because I use a 55 gallon sand trap to recover and measure my bullets weight SO I sight in at 50 yards. Nightforce Exbal is what I ran the number AND posted them by.

Thanks for the info fellers...I sighted it in with 130gr core lokt because that is what I had and it really like them. I think I will see what she'll do with some 140's.

Re: What Bullet Weight.... - 04/22/15 01:37 PM

Don't know why y'all are arguing .270. Just get one of these and think about all the money you'd save trying to decide on 130 vs 150 gr., treestands, camo, etc. Moving to Arizona so you can use it is a small price to pay for being able to shoot further than Shooters.... grin
