Pretty good haul

Found these guys while I was out setting some beaver traps this morning. Have never paid much attention to wild mushrooms but have been wanting to try chanterelles so I gathered a bunch up.

Those okay to eat? I found a pile of em yesterday

Saw about a bazzilian of them yesterday at one of my leases while I was filling feeders. Guess I should have grabbed some up. Now I know.

Coosa1, they are fantastic just sauteed in butter and scrambled with eggs. Or as a steak filet topper. In pasta, etc.

AU, do you may much attention to bugs in them? Probably 3/4 of the ones that I found were riddled with little bore holes (from beetles I'm assuming). Do you pass these by or eat em anyway?

I eat anyway since I cook them. I have found some small worms in some (also make the little holes), and I don't eat those. Although I'm sure I've eaten some by accident. Extra protein!

Now that I know what they are I’m finding them everywhere. Found this bunch of them when I was cutting grass about 75yds off my back porch this afternoon.

There's a mushroom foraging club in Birmingham if I remember correctly. Always wanted to go with them.

Men,,,,I’m a life member now. Sautéed mine last night on the blackstone with onions salt pepper and butter. Served with pork chops and sides. Those shrooms are nothing short of FANTASTIC!! Wow!

That sounds delicious! Try them sauteed in a little butter then scrambled in eggs too!

I would love to try some, but honestly I do not trust myself enough to be able to properly identify any mushroom I find growing in the wild. I would be really worried that I was about to take a "Fantastic" voyage on the crazy train, or possibly get a ride in a hearse after eating them.

AU_trout_bum - some of those look like false chanterelles to me b/c of the gills. How do you tell them apart? I've never messed with them b/c like JKlep said, I just don't trust myself enough to know exactly what I'm picking.

There's two types in my photo, golden chanterelles and smooth chanterelles. I'm not the best teacher, because I've picked them so much I just know, but I'll try. There's really only two look-alikes in the chanterelle woods. One is the jack-o-lanterns, which grow in clusters on wood (and actually glow in the dark) and the aptly named false chanterelles. One thing to eliminate the former is that chanterelles don't grow on wood. To eliminate false chanterelles, both golden and smooth chanterelles have false gills. These are more obvious in the smooth chanterelles, but still true in the goldens even though they have deeper false gills. If they are easily separated from the cap, they're chanterelles. You can also tear them, down their axis, from top to bottom, and chanterelles will be white inside (not hollow) and be stringy. They also sort of smell like apricots.

Did a little piddilin this morning and found tons of chanterelles. Brought a sack full home for supper

We cooked some more tonight. Had some out of town guest in that are super whole food fanatics and we managed to find a handful of chanterelles. Most had dried and gone but had a few left. I sautéed them with onions and peppers. Cooked down for a few hours with beef and venison tips. Well, I’d tell ya how good it was but you’d just have to have it yourself to believe!! Wow. Those shrooms are something else!!

I had a good mess of them about a week ago. I just sauteed in butter.

If you know a farmer who feeds their cows grain.. white caps out of the pile, feed them to your mother-n-law
she will love them..

AU how do you like your opinel pocket knife? what # is the one you have?

I think it's the #8. No positive though. They are good knives for what they cost!

Any search tips for these? Areas specifically to target?

Might be a little late in some places, but just about along any creek in Alabama right now. They should continue popping out with 65-70 nights and hot days a few days after good rains.

So my next trip down the Cahaba, I need to walk up the drains that come into the river? Especially after a decent rain? What's the time frame from finding them? Late Spring/Early Summer?

have knowledge of what you pick and eat. Some verities of mushrooms are deadly. The ones that are not are very tasty
