Turnip green soup

Posted By: FurFlyin

Turnip green soup - 12/01/15 09:15 PM

1- 16 oz bag frozen chopped turnip greens
2- 15.8oz cans of Great Northern or Navy beans
1 package (1.4 oz) Knorr vegetable recipe mix
14.5 oz can of chicken broth
1 1/2 to 2 cups of water
1 lb of Conecuh brand sausage, sliced 1/4" thick
Salt to taste
Sugar to taste (if greens are bitter)

Put all ingredients, except sausage in stock pot. Cook over medium heat. Put sliced sausage in skillet and brown it. Once sausage is browned, add to the soup. Cook until greens are tender, or for about an hour.

If you don't cook a pawn of cornbread (with no dad gum sugar in it) to go with this, move to China because you are a communist.

This is absolutely one of my favorite soups. It is absolutely awesome. If you like turnip greens, you'll love the soup. If you even remotely will eat turnip greens, you'll like the soup.

I love turnip greens, but my wife will only eat them on rare occasion. She loves the soup.

Re: Turnip green soup - 12/06/15 05:09 PM

That sounds pretty good...might have to try that.
Posted By: Frogeye

Re: Turnip green soup - 12/06/15 11:14 PM

I made a double batch of it last night and it was really good. Wasn't sure which conecuh so I went with 1 lb hickory smoked and 1 lb original. Had it again for lunch and then again tonight. Good stuff there. Although I do like the jiffy cornbread I went with plain cornbread per your directions.

Re: Turnip green soup - 12/07/15 06:25 AM

Been making it for a few years now that stuff is awesome
Posted By: FurFlyin

Re: Turnip green soup - 12/07/15 08:54 AM

It gets better the longer it gets kept in the refrigerator. Frogeye, glad you didn't do the Jiffy. You would likely have been struck by lightning.

Re: Turnip green soup - 12/07/15 01:21 PM

I'm going for this un. sounds good.
Posted By: Frogeye

Re: Turnip green soup - 12/07/15 01:26 PM

And I agree with Fur again on the part about the fridge, I thought it was better after having been put in the fridge. But, there is a time and place for the Jiffy cornbread.

Yep...gotta be careful with stuff like that. I once put instant coffee in a microwave over, and almost went back in time!

A bump for this one. It was fantastic. Will be a staple for the hunting camp as well. Thanks again Fur!

Man that looks good oakachoy. Next time my wife makes it, she's gonna double the greens too.

I'm gonna freeze enough greens next spring to make a pot a week.

Oakachoy, your soup kettle was a staple in my great-grandmother's, grandmother's and my wife's grandmother's kitchens. Wish I had all of theirs!

Can't wait to try this soup. Thanks for bumping.

You're welcome Notso.

My wife made this again today and at my request she put about half again the amount of greens called for. Perfection. Absolute perfection. This may be my favorite soul food meal.

Re: Turnip green soup - 01/18/16 09:58 PM

Made it again for the camp this past weekend. 4 of us there and everyone wanted the recipe. Dad fixed some cast iron skillet Mexican cornbread to go with it. Might have been the finest camp meal I've had.

Re: Turnip green soup - 12/21/16 06:49 PM

The wife unit is in the process of making this right now. Don't know how she ever heard of it- She's either been snooping around on here or Travis's wife told her about it. I've never tried it, but it smells good. Got me dadgum hongry!. I'm about to break out the cast iron and make a big pan of cornbread.

Re: Turnip green soup - 12/24/16 06:29 AM

Glad I saw this post. Mom used to make this and I loved it. Made a pot with some smoked link deer sausage this week and it was great. Very easy recipe that is perfect for the deer camp.

It does seem to create a lot of "backfires" after eating.

Re: Turnip green soup - 01/01/17 08:07 PM

If y'all haven't tried this, you're missing out. Just fixed a big pot for our "New Year's meal" and dangit, it's fine! Just as good, if not better, than it was last year when I made a couple batches. Cooked just like Fur recommended in the original post, only I added a second batch of greens and another 1/2lb of sausage. Fixed a big cast iron skillet full of cornbread and ate like a pig.

Another two thumbup from this big boy!

Holy cow is this stuff good. Ended up making it last night. I did like someone else suggested and bumped it up to a bag and a half of greens plus an onion that I chopped and browned with the Conecuh, and about a teaspoon of garlic powder. Having some again for lunch later today.

When in a quick and rapid hurry you can make this with canned, cooked turnip greens. Just have to heat and eat and is ready by the time the oven is preheated and cornbread is cooked.
