Who all hunts with a 20ga??

Thinking about swapping from 12 to 20. What set up do you have as your 20ga??

I do now. Remington 870 Youth with after market ATI stock.

870 20ga compact. 21" barrel. Remington RSF choke and 1 5/8 oz of TSS 8's.

My 10y/o has a 870 youth.
I may use it myself when he's not with me cause I love that little thing.

My primary gun is a 28 ga CZ O/U with 1-5/16 oz of TSS 9-1/2s.

But I'm itching to kill one with the following this year:

20 ga Belgium Browning Auto-5 with 28" full choke barrel (had this gun since 1973 - just bought a new forearm and spring so I could try running some TSS through it and bring it out of retirement).
28 ga Franchi 48AL with factory full (brand new)
.410 Yildiz O/U (brand new)
.410 Rem 870 (brand new)

I would love to have a Franchi 28 ga. If you don't mind where did you get it and how much can I expect to spend?

I shoot a 11-87 20 ga and a A-5 20 ga. I wouldn't shoot a 12 ga or bigger if I could but I can't with the recoil so its a moot point. Do probably need to go down to a 28 ga.

This will be my 3rd year running this rig. My poor old 12 ga has become a safe queen.

Crenshaw that has got to be one of the simple but nastiest looking paint jobs seen on a pine chicken-getter I've seen in a while.

I used one of my son's 1187 Compact 20's last year with a Carlson .575 choke and Federal Heavyweight 7s. This year I am going to try an 870 Compact Jr. (18.5" barrel), ATI Talon 6-position stock, FF3, some choke, and TSS 9s. Haven't shot it yet, and not real sure if I want to use it or go back to an 1187 Compact.

870 compact 21" bbl. Truglo sights and a little bottomland on it. got an IC and a tru glo ssx and will see which throws TSS 9's Better.

I believe that is a cerakote job. But it looks bad ass. Nice job.

Do y'all still feel like you've got good range with the 20ga? Say, out to 40 yards? (With my current 3.5" 12ga I will shoot 50 yards)

Im confident to 60 yards with my 20g guns. No farther, the same with my 12g guns.

I get no more practical range from the 12 ga than the 20 ga (when shooting hi-test). Because the limitation for both is confidence in my ability to put the core of the pattern on his head and neck at ranges where you have to consider drop, not the gun/ammo's ability to do the job. And I have no interest in trying to shoot one that far anyway. But the beauty of the larger bores is that I can choke it wider to where I have a lot more margin for error at all ranges due to the dense pattern outside the core, while still having more range than needed to cover for any range estimation errors in the heat of the moment.

The 28 ga reduces my comfortable range to only about 55 yds. The .410 reduces that comfortable range by another 15 yds.

I have several metal plates and screws holding my neck together so I need low recoil. Even if I could handle a 10 or 12 ga I would still shoot a 20 ga. I just like them. The 28 ga. I need where there will be more shooting like dove. Now I don't get the range these other guys get but 40 is my max and no problem.

I have a Beretta A303 that I'm thinking about using this year if I don't trade it or sell it, first. I wouldn't be scared to roll one out to 40+ with a good factory load and the right choke.

Not that I meant too, but bang flopped one at 64 steps. Another bang flop at 52 yds I beleive. That one was intentional. I had a witness too (Squeaky).

I will continue to shoot my 870 12 ga with 3.5" Nitros.

I've personally seen this one roll several at 60+.

Only one was unintentional. I tried to shoot one that we latered ranged at 72yds in NE but Squeaky talked me out of it. I should have shot anyway. Bird would have had a TSS headache he couldn't recover from .

Hunting with 20 gauge Nova w/ 26" barrel & .562 Sumtoy. I get 185-195 at 40 yards running Federal HW #7. Since last season I've been shooting Hal's recipe of TSS 2-3/4" #9s. I wouldn't hesitate to reach out and touch one.

Ahh I was just poking fun. In a more serious note I do limit my shots to around that 60 yard mark even with TSS. I haven't had much luck hitting that noggin after that. Knocked the feet out from under a few before I learned my limitations. As with most any gun/shell combo knowing its limitations is the key to success with it.

She doesn't perform well enough to deserve a new dress. If she would ever meet my expectations, I would buy her one. I tried one idea last week and wasn't satisfied with it. I'm gonna try one more idea I have and give her another chance.

It shoots good patterns with regular chokes, but it's too light to shoot TSS loads straight; RB shoots right and LB shoots left. I've found that almost any sxs will do this. I've hunted with it using eccentric chokes that make it shoot straight, but the pattern isn't all that great.

I tried filing a straight choke tube to make it shoot straight and it did, but the filing hurt the pattern to some extent. I'm gonna try a straight turkey choke in one barrel for a tight pattern, then make an eccentric shoot to the same place in the other more open barrel. At least, that's what I plan to try next. I'm pretty sure I can make it work.

In on the 20ga club. And to answer the question about range...3 of my 5 birds last year were killed at 40yds+. 1 was a lil too far to be shootin, but he died.

Gonna make a go at it with this guy this year. Suppose I will use FHW until I can find someone to cook up some TSS loads for me.
