Best advanced calling DVD?

I'm interested in buying a DVD that focuses on helping an experienced caller become better. Was wondering if any of y'all could reccommend one.

Like as in get better for competitions?

The best callers I've heard are best to hear live in the woods. I've heard competition type callers that were phenomenal and back woods callers that were phenomenal. Both kill birds with regularity, with the difference being that the back woods callers keep it simple.

I'll take setup over great calling every day.

OL HEN TURKEY IS THE BEST INSTRUCTOR THERE IS.. AND IF YOU REALLY PAY ATTENTION THEY REALLY SOUND HORRIBLE SOMETIMES. KINDA MAKES ME FELL DECENT ABOUT MY CALLING.

It would be mainly for allowing me to enter a competition one day if I chose. But I also believe calling, like anything else, is something that you should always be working on. As an example, I'd say if Scott Ellis is a 10, then I'm a 7. I'm a pretty good caller, but there's plenty of room for improvement.

And I agree on yalls points, mostly. Being a good woodsman is most important to killing turkeys. But I don't know of any sure enough turkey killers that aren't atleast above average woodsman and callers. Calling in a bird has a lot more to do with cadence and when you call and what call you make, than it does how you sound.

Who's Scott Ellis?

A really arrogant fella who spends most of his time either calling turkeys or telling everybody else about how good he can call turkeys. He would take offense to Solo's post about having a good setup being more advantageous than being a great caller.
I don't think he would make it very long around here.

I've got a friend that is absolutely the best caller that I've ever heard. I swear that boy is dang good and I believe anyone else here would agree if they heard him. He's killed public land birds in 30+ states on his way to killing a bird in every state that has a season.

I've got another buddy that taught me to turkey hunt. His calls are short, usually 3-4 notes, just enough to get some interest. His setup kills the birds and the calling is barely enough to let them know the direction to come. He's about 50 and started hunting at 7 years old. His father is 86 years old and still kills a GA public land limit EVERY year.

I'm a hybrid if you will....I like setups and I like to call, but it doesn't matter which method to me as long as he ends up over my shoulder.

Although I don't know him, I know of cove hunter. He's pretty dang talented. Anyways, I'm not looking for everybody's definition of best turkey skills, just wondering if anyone can reccommend an advanced DVD

Cove Hunter is not the guy I'm talking about, though he gets it done.

My buddy's name is David Ellis and at the end of last year he had kills in 42 states.

Come to Nashville in a couple months and see the World Champions. I'm sure some of them sell discs just never asked.

You are probably correct. I've heard it's good and he is no doubt an excellent caller.

Lovett Williams "real turkeys" series of cd's is the best I have heard.

It's a really good DVD, and yes, he is a great caller. Not my favorite personality wise, but he knows his shucks. I'm also real big on Shane Hendershot and any videos of him hunting/calling.

There is a lot of debate on this forum about calling and how helpful it is in killing turkeys. I'm sure you know as any turkey hunter knows, there are a whole bunch of different things that you can to help you kill a turkey (knowledge of the land, set up, woodsmanship, when to move and when not to move etc.) any of which can come in handy in different circumstances. However in saying that when I was younger I did dabble a little bit in the contest calling and people on here are exactly right in that contest and hunting are two completely different things. However, practicing for contest did help me a ton not necessarily in my contests but in knowing how to really work your call and make all sorts of sounds on a call. I'll be the first to admit that contest calling does not sound like realistic turkeys in my opinion and the only true way to sound like a turkey is to watch and listen to the vocalizations of turkeys in the wild. Because many of us have jobs and are busy we only have a limited amount of time in the woods and that can be hard to do, however I have found that the Denny Gulvas DVD's that you can order through Midwest turkey supply are some of the absolute best dvd's that you can watch and learn to help you understanding the sounds and vocalizations of turkeys in the wild. Watching those DVD's has really helped my calling and helped me to sound more realistic in the woods. If you take time to watch those DVD's and really study the cadences and vocalizations of a turkey along with a lot of time with a call in your mouth, it will help a lot. Although calling is just a small part of turkey hunting and I learn something every time I go in the woods, I truly like to have as may tools in the tool box when trying to outsmart and old gobbler and I truly believe that practicing and paying a lot of attention to turkey vocalizations has helped me tote a few more back to the truck than would have otherwise.
