My best - 03/25/14 09:10 PM
I killed a nice one this morning. By far my best. Here is the story. I went to a spot where I had heard one gobbling a few days ago. At about 6:20 one gobbles down the road a piece. I should have held tight for a few minutes but I took off that direction. After walking about 200 yards I don't hear him again. But I hear one in the direction I just came from. I decide to hold tight for a few but it now sounds like two birds in the area. They are just hammering ever 30 seconds or so. So I take off that way. I get to about 100 yards and decide to set up. By this time its around 6:45. I give a few soft yelps to let them know I'm there. I hear them fly down. I guess they didn't care to much for my yelps because they are going the opposite direction. They are still gobbling every min or so. I follow them for a couple hundred yards but they are moving at a pretty good pace. By now they have crossed in to some other property. It is a 40 acre spot that our club has land on both sides of. So I think about going after the first tom I heard. But then I think hey at pace these two are moving they might zoom right across this 40 and be back on our land. So I run back to my truck and head that way. I knew they were heading in a NE direction so I look at the map and just picture a straight line across the 40. When I get to that spot a hen crosses the road. So I pull up about 100 yards and go in to the woods where she went in. I can hear her yelping. She is pretty close so I just set up there. I hit a few soft yelps. She yelps every min or so and I answer her. The next time she yelps ole Tom gobbles. I'm only hearing one Tom now. He is close so I sit tight. He gobbles every min or so but isn't getting any closer. I'm not hearing the hen yelping anymore but I can hear her scratching around. I'm still letting out some very soft yelps every couple of minuets. Everything is quiet and I hear Phoooooot to my right. I roll my eyes that way and there he is 20 yards away. I just freeze waiting on him to go behind a tree so I can move the 870. But he just stands there drumming. It seemed like 5 minuets but I know it was probably only 1. He is not going anywhere and my legs begin to shake so I make up my mind the next time he drums I'm going to swing on him. That's what I did and the 870 and the magblends did their job. The other Tom was still gobbling even after I shot.
