Hunting North of Tuscaloosa - 04/23/23 06:06 PM

A farmer is offering to lease me some property with mostly mature pines but some stands of hardwood mixed in that is just north of Tuscaloosa. I’m familiar with property south of Tuscaloosa down through the Black Belt, but not up there. If you have any have intel of what the deer and turkey populations are like just north of Tuscaloosa, I’d appreciate it I have a 6-year old boy and want to get him in some deer, even if they don’t have the genetics of the Black Belt. A big plus if the region has a good turkey population. I get it’s property-specific, but general intel would be helpful. Thanks.

I did some hunting around berry, Al when I was in college. Tuscaloosa from what I saw when I hunted around there was low deer population but awesome genetics…these were average properties that I hunted. Turkey wise, they all had solid turkey numbers/at least some to fool with. If it’s a fair price, I would lease it personally at least for one year to see if it’s worth hunting

Probably has turkey on it considering the area. Deer could be good too but that'll depend on the neighbors.

Not any good hunting property there. PM his number and I'll break the news to him for you... seriously there are some pretty good bucks up there. I've seen a few 150 come out. A lot of course will depend on what the neighbors shoot.

Area specific but has loads of potential if you’re in the right place. I’ve seen genetics there rival anything in the black belt. Turkeys are definitely there.

I hunt along the River on the Jeffco/Walker line. Plenty of turkeys, but a lot of steep terrain. Deer population reasonable, seems to be increasing slowly. Some big bodied deer, but I've never seen any particularly big horns.

Definitely depends where. I hunted on the river north of Deerlick Creek. Good genetics for deer but low population. Turkeys were good

I can only speak from what I've seen from the places I've hunted- but the Northside/Fayette area seems to hold a lot of turkeys and deer wise they seem to be pretty typical Alabama deer. I'd say the typical 3/4yo is maybe 130'' and 160lbs or so. From what I've seen those mountain deer tend to stay pretty lean.

I really appreciate the insight. I've been wanting to find a lease for just me and my son for a while and hopefully this gamble turns out good. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
