Coyote attacked decoy

Coyote attacked decoy - 04/20/21 10:34 PM

My brother and I were turkey hunting in Kentucky a few days ago and were about 300 yds apart on a big field. I saw a coyote sprinting wide open across the field towards my brother. When it got about 15ft from his decoy it leaped into the air and landed on top the decoy and grabbed it by the neck. It quickly released the decoy and sprinted off. My brother called a gobbler in a few minutes after that!

I had a large hawk swoop down and attack a hen decoy last year. It didn’t go as planned and he hit the ground hard. It got up and Stood there dazed for a few minutes, then flew up onto a limb and eyeballed that hen decoy for 5 mins before flying off. It was an awesome sight and a lesson at how lethal a hawk is on turkeys. but the way it worked out for him was pretty damn funny when that hen body slammed him.

I’ve had buzzards swoop down at decoys and live hens out in an open field. They buzzards got about 5’ from the hens.

I’ve had coyotes and bobcats put the sneak on decoys several times.

I walked by a chufa field about 3 pm one afternoon the second week of the season and eased up to it to see if there was a turkey in it. Didn't see one and was about to go on when I saw some movement in the middle of the patch. I first thought a turkey was lying in the field, then I realized it was a coyote. He had crouched down in the 6" high grass to wait for a turkey to come along. He was too far for me to kill him, but that load of tss #9 definitely ruined his day.

The biologists tell us that coyotes seldom catch a turkey, but I have observed that they spend a lot of time trying. Maybe they are like we are and keep going even without success, but I suspect that they catch more than some think.

As General Stonewall Jackson said about the Yankees - "Kill them; kill them all."

I've never seen the need to buy one of those predator decoys to hunt coyotes. Grab a turkey decoy and get to yelping and something will come in if the wind is right. This happened to me my first time out turkey hunting and it was quite an experience having a coyote at about 20 yards, learned a good lesson on having your gun at the ready and not pointed downward, too.

I’ve had it happen twice. First time I was young, maybe 12-the year decoys were legalized, and I was so surprised/shaken I missed the coyote twice at less than 10 yards.

Second time no decoy was involved. I was 40 yards off a pasture and a yote came cruising by the field edge right at first light. Yelped to him and he turned on a dime and sprinted right at me. Rolled him up at 10 steps or less. Got the blood flowing.

Ruin one hunt to save many more. Yotes never get a pass

Re: Coyote attacked decoy - 04/21/21 01:52 PM

I have seen a coyote on most hunts this year. I killed one at 10 steps immediately after sitting down and yelping on a dead sprint and had another one flanking to the right. I honestly believe they get way more than people think especially when hens are nesting. I hunt a place that has not been properly burned and believe that the more cover they have the more success they have and the more coyotes you have. I read in an article somewhere that a majority of hens sit on their nest at night and spend an a majority of the time on nest throughout the night if that is the case I don't see how they don't get more than people think.

I had a yote slam a decoy in Kansas. He hit it doing 60mph and left at the same speed. No time for a shot!!!

i've said it for years - HUNGER is a powerful & strong motivating force - be it for an animal or a human ... go 5 days without food & tell me i'm wrong ... that show, Alone, will prove my point - those guys go to extremes to eat

only Jesus can go 40 days in the desert & defeat Satan ... 40 hours is a long enough time w/out anything to eat

Had 2 come into 70 yards eyeing the piss out of my decoys a few weekends ago. My buddy and i were getting ready to blast on them, but they caught our wind and took off.

That coyote would have never got that close to my decoy, I shot one last year that was heading toward mine. I wasn't letting him get that close.

Re: Coyote attacked decoy - 04/26/21 12:15 AM

I had this happen today put decoy out and before I could get back to the tree a coyote hit it wide open. I sat in disbelief and another one came walking directly up to me. I have seen a coyote on most hunts and passed on several earlier in the season. I think they are a huge problem that are underestimated. They get a lot more than people think in my opinion the turkeys here this year gobble some on the roost but very seldom to the gobble on the ground like they have in years past.

I killed one yesterday after church, one was heading across the field toward two geese feeding near my pond. My wofe was afraid the 300 win mag was a little loud for the neighborhood.
