Loaded my first shell...

Loaded my first shell... - 04/12/20 09:28 PM

I just put together my first shotgun shell using Hals Big 20xl load. It loaded and fired like it should and threw a good pattern.

Now for a few questions....

Those of you that use this load, do you trim the hull?

Is there a certain rpm that causes the roll crimper to perform better?

How important is the roll crimp concerning pattern consistency from shot to shot?

Should the shot and buffer be completely below the top, even with, or above the top of wad?

Have you seen a difference in performance with cork or felt?

What is your method to ensure an even a "pretty" roll crimp?

Thanks for the help!

If you use a 3" hull and one of the red seals, you don't trim it. If you don't use the seal, you will need to trim 1/4".

I think the slower, the better.

Not very.

Should the shot and buffer be completely below the top, even with, or above the top of wad?

I like it even.

Dangerous sounding question. They are not interchangeable. You gotta follow the recipe, whichever it says.

I use a stop on the drill press to take the variables out of it. Good luck!

Thanks for the help!

Thanks fr the help!!

Does changing from cork to felt, or vice versa, change pressures?

Yes, it can. I've read of instances where it changed it a significant amount. It's probably not gonna damage anything because there is a safety factor with tested loads, and if you got it from Hal it's been tested. But there is no reason to shoot an over pressure load when you can do it right. Just follow the recipe and you will be ok. I like pretty crimps, but the appearance doesn't affect how it shoots.

Ok. Thanks. Hal's recipe says I can use felt instead of cork. When I ordered supplies everyone was out of cork

You might want to confirm that

Read it multiple times. I'm using the same size felt as cork.... 1/8 and 1/4

Just read it again to make sure. Specifically says if out of stock, use felt instead

I use cork and felt in mine. Both 1/8” pieces.

Big 20xl load calls for both. If Hal said it was fine to substitute, then I wouldn't worry about it

I had the same issue when I got the data from him. Per Hal, It is OK. I’ve shot it both ways now that I’ve got cork and there is no difference in pattern density. You’re good to go substituting felt for the piece of cork. Just make sure you use the felt he told you to.

Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, and the shot trap finished up

I ended up trimming my hulls a bit to get a pretty crimp and leave about a 1/4” hull over shot card. If u have to much hull it will “smash” some. Ihavent noticed any difference in patterns though on ugly vs pretty crimps

If you want a pretty roll crimp trim your hulls and use a GAPE roll crimp. GAPE makes some fine hand loading tools that have been worth every penny I’ve spent on them.

This is the 1 5/8 ounce load and it’s a BPI crimping tool and it does well, now the 410 loads I still have to work on getting them to look that good. The one on the right mine and the other is an APEX and mine looks just as good
