Mouth Call Help - 01/14/20 02:31 PM

How did everyone learn to use a mouth call? I have experimented with many different calls and still cant seem to figure it out.

For one, you need to figure out how you present air across the call....left, right or middle. Good callers seem to be able to change it on demand, but in prefer to find a call that is cut for the side I naturally present air from. Make sure you're pushing air with your diaphragm, not just "blowing" air. Get the mouth call sealed against the roof of your mouth so air is forced between your tongue and the call reeds. It took me a few seasons to get confident with one. I still don't feel confident enough to like calling in front of other folks but I've called birds in so that's really all that matters.

Someone posted a video awhile back that explains all of that.....I cant find it but hopefully they'll repost it because it really helped me

I liken it a lot to learning to play guitar. When you first get one, you're intrigued by the sounds it makes. But before long, you get frustrated because you realize it sounds awful, and you set it down and don't pick it up. It takes practice and time like anything. Another thing is to try multiple calls. I've got a one or two calls I bought that no matter what I do, just don't sound right for me.

Hiss like a cat. You feel how that air moves across the top of your mouth? That's how you run a mouth call. Watch some Shane Simpson videos and you'll get it in an afternoon as long as you don't have issues with gagging or something.

Like other said, watch Shane’s video, try different calls and practice practice and practice! Took me forever to be confident enough to use one in the woods and I’m still no expert but I’ve managed to trick a turkey or 3

Try playing songs with it. Like the theme to A-team or Jeopardy or dixie. Seriously, sometimes it isn't about sounding like a turkey but learning what the call does or doesn't do.

I would suggest getting a cheap (very cheap) single and really getting comfortable. Then you'll sound better in a 2.5 or 3.5 or 4.

A lot of practice...had no help with it except the sounds on a Ben rogers lee cassette tape and developed my own way that I add lil tricks and twists to it...You are lucky to have these killers on here helping so I would pay attention to whatever they say.

I can do basic stuff on one, but purrs and a "water drop cluck/putt" still elude me

I didn't have much trouble learning a diaphragm call. Took a while to learn a tube. When I finally "got it", it just comes naturally now.

what can you not figure out? i thought this series from Primos had a lot of useful tips ... if all you can ever do is a 3-4 note soft yelp, you'll be deadly in the woods ... God made boxes & slates & other calls for a reason
