Hunting Choccolocco or Oakmulgee

Hunting Choccolocco or Oakmulgee - 10/31/19 08:13 PM

Looking to hunt Choccolocco or Oakmulgee this upcoming spring for turkey. I am a SW FL resident, so this is a haul for me.

Looking for any tips regarding hunting these, not spots. Also any tips regarding these WMA's as I'm coming out of state are appreciated. I'll only have 1 day to scout prior. What do eastern turkeys tend to go to for habitat up there? Similar to the osceolas in the big pines?

If anyone has any question regarding FL hunts let me know. Although I haven't shot an OSceola, I have been hunting them on public lands for the past 4 years down here. Very high pressure which makes it difficult here.

Thanks in advanced

I live within minutes of Choccolocco, it has a "average+" population, but it's really rugged terrain and gets "average" hunting pressure. Very steep hardwood ridges, not too thick. Historically the birds have gobbled very good there, but (to me anyway) the past two seasons have been rather poor. I can't offer any insight on Oakmulgee, but it probably has more game since it's in a more game-rich part of the state. Oakmulgee would likely be far better for deer, but Choccolocco holds it own for turkeys!

Thanks for the insight. Ever come down to Central/ SW FL let me know I'll tell you which WMA to hunt and which to stay away from.

Been a few years since I hunted it but the northern part of Chocoo near Coleman Lake always had a pretty good population of birds. The Pinhoti Trail runs through it. You can get on it and it makes covering ground alot easier. As already said. It’s steep and you need your hiking boots on.

I live within sight of Chocolocco. If you come, bring a respirator. They’ll start burning Chocolocco as soon as deer season is over and won’t quit until June. They have also been logging the hell out of it for the past year.
