Chufa question - 06/06/19 10:57 AM

Planted chufa yesterday and the rain started as we closed the gate leaving. I planted chufa a few years ago and they were up about four inches when I checked on them. I had to return a couple days later and found them completely gone. ARMY WORMS got them all. I can’t be down there every couple of days to check them. Is there a product that will ward them off?

I would not think army worms would hurt them. They should continue to grow after the worms leave I would think. The worms only eat the above ground part right?

I've been doing some research on this subject myself.
Bifenthrin seems to be a popular insecticide for controlling army worms.
There are several recommendations for the use of Dawn dish liquid and vegetable cooking oils.
However, the options about the particular mixture vary widely.
Personally, I think the use of bifenthrin will probably be a good choice.

Armyworms gotta be sprayed based on counts nothing will be a preventative spray. Any pyrethroid will kill AW. You gotta have an RUP permit to buy it. If you don’t have permit then go with Sevin XLR to get them gone

I am afraid I won’t be able to check on them regularly enough to identify the issue in time. I may just have to take my chances. Thanks!
