Bird #2 DOWN! - 04/30/18 01:45 PM
Figured one last [short] hunt before work on the last day of the season. Same spot where I killed the jake yesterday. I'd heard a bird gobble there last week but never could get on him, and yesterday I thought I heard him gobble on the roost but couldn't be certain, but I figured that was as good a spot to try as any. Did a fly down and a little light clucking and yelping but didn't hear anything else for a bit. Then with no warning, a bird lets out a gobble probably 40yds away over my right shoulder (thank goodness I'm a lefty) and I about pee'd on myself.
I was about 10yds in the woods on one side of a road, and he was just inside the treeline on the other side of the road. I could see movement but couldn't really get a good look at him. He took about 5 more steps and stuck his head up in a picture-perfect hole in the brush and I pulled the trigger. Never heard him flopping or anything and was worried I missed. As soon as I shot I took off running, jumped through the briars and underbrush in the tree line and found him laying there. About the time I got to him he twitched a wing so I got a boot on his neck. He flopped and beat me for about 30 seconds and it was game over!
I know y'all told me once I got the first one out of the way, the rest would come easier, but dang I didn't realize it'd be this soon after!!!
