LFTW 4/21/18 - 04/21/18 09:39 AM

Well, two early season hunts resulted in one miss in the forest. Then family illness and death sidelined me. This a.m. i am back at it on a wma. Hopefully i can sit on a hill and just think and meditate in the quiet for a while. Birds in the area would be a welcome bonus. Good luck all and be safe.

I’m acting as guide this morning trying to get a young man his first turkey. I hope we can find one that wants to act right.

Had a Jake fly down right behind me. Lucky for him he hit the ground where I couldn't get a shot on him. I'm pretty pissed off at them right now.

Dead at 630. Ain’t nothing like killing a bird on your birthday.

Had one sneak in hard to my right at about 0600. Got impatient and tried to swing on him and missed. He flew about 150 down the mountain and started clucking. Got him fired up gobbling again. I got up and ran about 25 down the old logging road and put out a hen. Right at 630, two birds came down the old logging road that I just missed the bird on. I was still sitting on the same tree. Not sure if the one I killed was the one I missed or not, but he got a ride to the house regardless. They were plain stupid this morning.

He hammered like crazy on the limb then went silent. Now I'm between him and the hen he was with last night. Hoping she'll entice him past me.

Finally hearing a bird. He's 300 yards across line but sounds awesome! He went nuts when a coyote started barking and howling.

Make that 400 yards now...answering everything but moving off out into a cutover.

That bird had a death wish and somebody granted it. Best gobbling I've heard all season. On to see if there is another one around that has the same wish.

Re: LFTW 4/21/18 - 04/21/18 01:59 PM

Only got to hunt until 8 today....got a funeral and 2 ball games today. Had one gobbling pretty good this morning but literally could not tell what direction it was in. I really think it was the same bird every time bc it always sounded the same, but I couldn't get a bearing on what direction it was coming from. I don't know if it was echoing off the terrain or if my ears are stopped up from this sinus congestion BS.. .....it was bizarre. He wasn't particularly close, but I got him to answer a box call twice, but 45 min later I hadn't seen or heard anything from him again and had to leave anyway.

A friend asked me last night why I keep turkey hunting........I honestly didn't know how to answer. It's not even particularly fun anymore, I don't really enjoy it, but I can't not do it.

What a crappy season it's been.

Re: LFTW 4/21/18 - 04/21/18 01:59 PM

Congrats to all the killers! I'm really surprised to see so much success today. Got a pretty cold east wind here, and I've always found that to be the worst conditions for hearing gobbling. We haven't heard a gobble, didn't hear an owl, and heard only a few crows. Everything in the woods is being quiet.

Got my shooter out in front of me, and I am playing on the phone. We are just deer hunting them now

Yep same here! My buddy's dad killed one early this morning (he's in his 80s) his first in a long time, since he's not able to get around good anymore. I'll post up some pics in a bit....

Had one pitch down about 60 yds. Just over the top of the hill. Never saw him again. Thought we had that one dang it.
