I don't believe gobbling turkeys could be spooky.
I had a hen start cackling once when I was hunting on flood plain next to large reservoir. It was one of those dead silent mornings where the mist is the loudest thing around and she was about 80 yards away across a creek in a cypress grove. I had no idea there were turkeys there, but from the first note out of her mouth til the last, it sounded like there were twenty gobblers in a wad right on top of her. It made my heart jump into my throat like a bolt of lightening crashing down in front of me. Spooky as all hell. To this day it is still one of my most vivid turkey hunting memories.
I never did find how many birds were in that wad. Right after they thundered away a rogue gobbler on my side of the creek decided to join the fray. Too bad for him -- I was in between them
