LFTTW 4/22/17 - 04/22/17 04:01 AM

Up drinking some coffee and sick as a dog. Entire house has been hit with either bad sinus infections or a head cold. But I figure I can be sick in the woods just s easily as I can be at home. Maybe my cough will make one shock-gobble.

At the gate getting ready to walk. The clear cut gobbler has made it personal. It's a beautiful morning no matter what happens.

Hunting the NF. Heard a few birds gobbling way off on private land. Should've wore my sneakers

Re: LFTTW 4/22/17 - 04/22/17 06:27 AM

Had one gobble 7-8 times North of me then all hell broke loose down in the swamp. Sounded like a pig fight. All quiet now.

Still haven't heard a gobble. Sitting in some hardwoods with a clear cut and thinned pines nearby. Just deer hunting them now and I hate doing this.

Holy crap. This one made me work for it but #3 is in the bag. Had to come mostly to him but he's worth it.

I was on a bird and got ran off by the lightning. It was pretty cool watching him and his hens face the driving rain. They were about 90 yards out in a field. When the wind got really bad they just kinda squatted down and rode it out. All my gear is completely soaked.

Listened to one gobble from 5:15 to 9:15. I must've flicked my safety off a dozen times or more. Several times I thought he was ready to commit but he never showed. I've been walking since 10am and I've spooked 2 hens and a PBT.

Re: LFTTW 4/22/17 - 04/22/17 03:09 PM

Heard nothing on the roost at daylight. Went back to camp at 7. Neighbor's jackass went to hollering and one shock gobbled to it. I knew he was on a cutover a long ways off!! I took off and about 20 minutes later, I got to the cutover. I eased up to it and spotted a hen on a hill about 200 yards out. Then I spotted movement about 250 yards to the right. Two long beards were in a sprint to the hen. I cut real loud and quick and both gobbled. They stopped about 100 yards from that gen and started strutting and gobbling at everything I threw at them. I thought for a minute they might come to me, but they then took off for the hen again. I then made a huge loop to get around in front of them. After about a 10 minute and 500 yard hike, I got around on the other end of the cutover. I belly crawled up to the edge and soft yelped. Both of them cut me off about 80 yards out. I quickly set up and waited. After 5 minutes, I called again and again they cut me off. Only this time they were just over the rise no more than 50 yards out. After a minute or two, I hear spitting and drumming. Then I see a fan pop up at the crest of the hill. I then see two red heads pop up then right back down. I get the gun up and wait for them to come on over the crest. Both of them top the hill and the strutter starts putting on a show. After about 30 seconds of strutting, he clears a small brush pile and I let the XRs fly.

10 1/4" beard
3/4" spurs
17.4 pounds

Did I mention these XRs are bad news for turkeys!! This is a 37 yard shot!!

I was in between two gobblers that were coming together. One was at 75 yds and the one on the other side was around 150 and coming strong. The sky opened up came a non stop downpour and game over.

I'm watching what looks like either two jakes or two gobblers groom themselves right under a hill in the field I'm sitting on. There about 100 yards out
