Poults 2016

Poults 2016 - 06/27/16 03:25 PM

Somebody usually posts a poult report, and I hadn't noticed one yet.

I've seen a few with a good hatch and a few lone hens. Mixed results I guess. Surely this drought is good for something? What you got?

I haven't seen one yet either.

Re: Poults 2016 - 06/27/16 03:38 PM

I have seen a handful of lone hens along the side of the road and at the farm and have yet to see a hen with poults but I imagine by now they are fairly good size birds.

That sounded confusing. I meant to say I haven't seen a thread about it.

I've seen a few hens with a pretty good hatch. I'm sure they didn't all make it past that magical 2 week period, but I've seen some. But I've noticed some lonely hens also.

Re: Poults 2016 - 06/27/16 09:11 PM

I saw 30 today. They were the size of a small chicken and
they were with 2 hens.

I didn't see this thread before posting my poult thread.

My bad.

I've got some good poult pics from my north Dallas Cty lease. Hatch looked to be decent on this property. I also have a gobbler strutting for two hens in mid June.

Seen more than I normally see in Colbert Cty so far.

Re: Poults 2016 - 06/28/16 08:57 AM

I hope the survival rate is better than the confounded geese in east Montgomery. One set of geese started out with 8 goslings. They're down to 3 as of yesterday. It's bad to say but I hope none of them survive. They are becoming a huge nuisance our here.

Two large groups on my property in Dallas County, it looks really good so far. Come on spring 2018.

Re: Poults 2016 - 06/28/16 01:23 PM

Just pulled cards, rode up on a hen who had a handful with her. Extremely tiny, like a chick at the feed store tiny. I video'd one, I'll try to post shortly. Was interesting to watch hen watch them from safe distance. I obviously didn't mess with them, but could have easily caught any amount I wanted with hands. Can't imagine how easy it would be for coyote or bobcat

Re: Poults 2016 - 06/28/16 01:27 PM

I saw about 5 or 6 several weeks ago, that were not far from flying. That same week I killed 2 with a hay mower, 4 got out in time. 2 weeks ago my stupid boxer brought a poult up to the house she had been "playing" with. Then last week I saw 4 poults with 2 hens, they all could fly.

Monday I saw 3 hens in front of my house with zero poults.

All sightings are within a half mile of my house so some are likely the same.

For some reason photo bucket is shrinking it. Can text if someone knows about these things, a couple of people I've shown say only a few days/weeks old max

They are very new. I scattered some out of a road that size about May 10. That particular hen on your place had to re-nest, and it looks to have paid off.

I had a pic from yesterday that had 8 poults and one hen in it. I haven't had cameras out at all until this past thursday. It got me excited.

Re: Poults 2016 - 07/12/16 12:22 PM

I was seeing several hens with varied size poults in early-mid June. Most of them were on the old Fort McClellan in Anniston, and along the new bypass that opened in Anniston. One particular hen had a BUNCH of babies, looked like maybe a dozen. Most of them only had 2 or 3 (these were larger chicks, so I'm guessing she started with more, but they were killed/died). Not sure if I could draw any conclusions, but by the end of June I was not seeing ANY hens with babies of any size. Made me wonder if they all got killed.

Re: Poults 2016 - 07/16/16 02:21 PM

I've seen 2 hens with poults in the same field 2 days in a row while spraying. They would much rather hide in the tall grass than run away.

Re: Poults 2016 - 07/17/16 09:06 AM

saw 2 hens with 6 poults (they could fly) yesterday.Unfortunately as I was riding the Honda through the tall grass I ran over one and broke it's wing. It couldn't fly but could still haul butt.

Taken 5 minutes ago. 3 hens and poults. Pretty cool to see poults born at two different times together.

I saw about 10 with two hens Saturday on the TVA Reservation in Muscle Shoals. I told the game warden about seeing them and he said he has also seen them. Hope they make it. Coyotes and bobcats are in abundance there also.

Just looked at a card. I have a pic with 3 hens and 19 poults. I'm more excited over them than the deer pics. This is the same field I had a pic of 8 2 weeks ago.

The two I saw this weekend were with two hens. Not a very good ratio at all.

Re: Poults 2016 - 07/24/16 02:09 PM

Just saw a hen with 9 small poults in my field. Good to see but the poults were literally just bigger than quail. Makes me wonder if maybe the hen didn't loose her first brood and start over.

I saw one hen with about 12 poults this week. They were already big. Not a whole lot smaller than the hen.

I hate to say it, but I expected doom and gloom from you. Looks to be another solid hatch in my area and from most reports on here, statewide. I hate it for you Matt, but sounds like you have a gar hole

I saw 16 today big enough to fly on the side of the road in Reeltown. Saw 11 a couple weeks ago in Lee County. I hope they get smart enough to stay out of the middle of the highway.
