It still works

that is pulling up and shaking hands sitting on the front porch and talking up a hunting permit. Not to brag but I've never spent a dollar on a lease in one of the toughtest counties in the state to find land to hunt. Most of my hunting buddies laugh when I tell them I'm going to see old farmer whoever to see about huntin his place.I always tell them worst case scenario is they say no. smile The first impression is every thing when it comes to country folks and they have you judged by the time you make it to the front porch. I get tired of hearing folks crying about no where to hunt and they never get out and try. I remember many years ago going to a guy that allowed no one on his land for any reason and you dare not ask.I stopped one day and our conversation began with talking about God and ended with the permit no one would ever think possible. I had sole hunting rights to his place for 7 yrs before his death and the children took over. The point is the world is still full of good folks that have bad impressions of hunters for various reasons. I was reading the post "Picked up a Sod Farm" and it got me to thinking about how possible it can be.

I do the same. I keep my land owners supplied with fresh fish, deer, turkey etc.. Most of them just want you to respect the land and have a cup of coffee with them and chew the fat. Something I really enjoy anyway. I like hearing people's history.

I know one guy that would run you off in a heart beat if you had a fist full of cash. Two ricks of red oak first of Oct and it's all mine which is about $ 80 worth a wood or 1/2 day work.

Most people just want a friend, not someone to be there to want something.

Respect and friendship can go along ways in the world.

Yep, it is amazing at what a little fellowship and pleasant conversation can lead to, even today. There are still great folks out there, and most are happy to spend it with others they consider to be good folks also. Congrats on picking the new property! thumbup

I constantly hear about people that just ask for hunting permission and get it, free of charge. Never been able to make it work though.

seems like everyone around here knows what hunting land leases for and wants double that amount.

I am lucky enough to have had a fine man for a father and everyone in this small town and local communities knew him. I am a plumber here and have probably been in at least 25% of the houses in this county. You wouldn't believe the people that know I hunt and just offer me permission to hunt their parcel. They also know me as a catfisher and will call me when they get worms on their catalpa trees, not kiddin. I know city life is more convenient but I love my small town!

Yeah, that kind of networking certainly helps. Between people knowing your family and having a job that has you "out and about" constantly.

In summary, talk about God as if you truly care for them to get what you really wanted. You turkey hunters are something else!

In summary of your summary that's a pretty sorry thing to say. Our conversation began with talking about what a blessing it was to live in this part of the country and led to further conversation on the matter. It wasn't a planned by any stretch.

Ridgestalker - I'm not being serious, in any way.

Obviously - I turkey hunt. Hence the last part trying to be funny. I can see where a person may not feel the subject is something to joke about without proper context. But just imagine talking with a good friend that you can joke with, and he gives you that sneaky grin when he says it. C'mon now!

Re: It still works - 08/30/15 10:20 AM

I have gotten way more hunting oppertunities by just stopping and visiting and drinking coffee with people. I know it's my job to do this but some people really enjoy visiting and don't get to do it much. Especially the older people who can't get out like they used to. Some say its just a way to say thanks for being there to listen to them. I also return the favor by bushhogging there farm rds and mowing thier grass or anything they need done. A little hard work can go a long way. It also helps keep the poachers and trespassers off thier property. I am very fortunate to work for the public and some still like us around. I love visiting with the elders. There a world of info and wisdom out there to learn.

There's a guy that lives near me that has several hundred acres of land in our area, all packed with deer. All this within 5 minutes of my home ...

Word has it that you'd better not even ask, he won't allow his own blood kin to hunt it. He drinks a lot, he's not very nice, and he's pretty much a hermit from what I hear. Lots of times I drive by and see him sitting on a tractor or doing some work on the property. I've been thinking about how to approach this guy ...

All he can say is no. Been cussed for asking more than once.

I'd try whiskey or moonshine first.

No doubt! Stop by about sundown with a handle of JD, some ice, and two styrofoam cups - just say you seen him around, live close by and wanted to meet him. Have a couple drinks with him and see where the conversation goes.

My buddy & I unlocked a BADASS piece of property that way in college with the same type of person. Guy was a drunk & very set in his ways, ornery , lived in a trailer that shoulda been condemned. We drank outside. It was a sweet place to deer & duck hunt for two years till we pissed him off and got kicked out!! Bwhaha!
