Hot Drink In Stand

Hot Drink In Stand - 11/14/14 08:39 AM

Ok guys, normally I take a bottle of water with me during bow season to keep cool more so than warm. Do any of you carry something warm to the stand while bow hunting? I cant take coffee because I think it would effect my shot and I am very sure the deer would wind it in a heart beat. Anyone have any suggestions on something to take other than just hot/warm water? Last thing I want to do is drink ice water in 20 degree weather.

If Im in a stand on a 25* morning and there happens to be a thermos with hot coffee or hot chocolate in it with me, I could care less if a deer smells it. if coffee bothers them then my stinking azz has probably already been busted. grin

throw a few cedar leaves in your warm/hot water, I've had worse.

MASH ME

I stopped by walmart this morning to look at thermos containers and found this one. I think that might work pretty well. I am thinking of going with some green tea or maybe some pine needle tea.

I just did for the first time last weekend. I carried a thermos of coffee. And I killed a deer! I am sure there is some risk of deer smelling it but I have deer smelling me anyway even without coffee. You just can't beat a deer's nose.

I got a thermos that has a flip open top so there is no cup to worry about.

This is what I bought.

I don't think a deer would spook at smelling coffee. If a deer spooked at every strange smell he gets in the woods he would dig a hole, get in it, and never come out. I think one would give pause, get another good whiff of whatever, and if it cannot determine if its a danger, life will go on as usual. I think some of this stuff is overhtinking it. Take a warm drink with you.

You know we all hear about so and so killed a big buck with a cigarette in his mouth and Redman in his cheek. I don't think those stories are luck, I think it just didn't matter.

Sounds like a plan to me. Hot tea it is! Id be afraid coffee would effect my shot.

I have this one. It's ridiculous how long it keeps stuff hot.

Like the others said, I wouldn't worry about the scent of your drink messing up your hunt. Also, I think the cold and excitement would affect my shot much more than caffeine would!

I personally believe that some scents people worry about are attractive to deer. That's why if I carry food or drink with me its something fruity or nutty. For example, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, mixed nuts, natural fruit juice, etc. I don't always dip when hunting but when I do I make sure it's a berry blend.

I carry a thermos of coffee on cold mornings and have never had a deer spook from it. If he smells the coffee, he smells you, same as a thermacell.

I wouldn't worry about the deer smelling whatever drink you have, cause as TC already pointed out, if they are smelling your drink, they're already smelling you. I rarely drink or eat anything on stand. Drinking makes me have to pee, and that requires a good deal of movement, so i don't drink much. This year, i'm after a hoss, so i'll probably spend longer sits and i'll probably eat lunch and drink a little water. Coffee also can act like a laxitive, so think about that.

Yet another reason I avoid it when hunting!

I carry a big stainless thermos and hang it right on a tree limb. Never had a prob. I have had to set my cup down to shoot a deer though, but it was with a rifle.

The way i look at it, the more comfortable you are, the longer you will sit and enjoy your hunt.

When you plan on sitting in a stand and it's in the teens or 20's, a couple cups of hot coffee makes staying longer a lot easier to do.

I've taken coffee hunting before, but mainly stick to Dr. Peppers and Mt. Dews.

If I'm planning an all day sit after cold weather sits in, I carry a thermos of chicken noodle soup to eat for lunch.

If it's really cold and I'm in a shooting house, I'll carry a thermos of coffee. Otherwise it's just a bottle of water.

I think if the deer is upwind from you he wont smell you or what you are drinking if he is downwind he gonna smell you whether you drinking coffee or not.

I killed a big 8 pt last year while drinking coffee in the stand...I'm pretty sure you shouldn't worry about being winded because of your drink
