LFTT 11/7/14 - 11/07/14 06:25 AM

I'm set up on a red oak ridge and they have the ground covered. I'm 150 yards from bedding area and there is no white oaks within 2 miles. Good luck to everyone today.

Day 7.....

Fixing to head into an acorn flat on the edge of some beaver ponds down here in Greene County at a buddy's place.

Re: LFTT 11/7/14 - 11/07/14 07:06 AM

Just seen one big deer , but couldn't tell what it was at 60 yards. Still was a little to dark. I must have brushed up against some bushes when walking in because when it got to where I walked it snorted and run off back the way it come from.

Re: LFTT 11/7/14 - 11/07/14 07:13 AM

Up a tree in the flat where I drew blood opening morning hopefully something will come through again. I hope the wind settles down.

Running a little late, but slipped into an area next to a bedding area. Has some oaks mixed with a few hickory. Three were bedded under my stand when I walked in. This place has paid off before, maybe it will again today. Good luck

Hunting an old road bed between the thick bedding area behind me and the slightly less thick area in front of me that leads to the oak trees. Last year I climbed hundred yards in the thick stuff, I tried to get to my tree for the first time this year and couldn't get that far in.

Finally a shot on a big nanny head. Looked like I hit her a little back to far , but she was quartering away so maybe not that bad. I had rather shoot a doe with a bow than a big buck with a gun any day. Even after around 100 deer with a bow it still gets my blood pumping.

Re: LFTT 11/7/14 - 11/07/14 09:45 AM

I shot a small buck but I'm nervous about the shot. I hit him and he went down. Thought I spined him but I think I shocked the spinal cord. He rolled down hill and I lost sight of him. Got down and it's obvious he is on his feet. I've got blood but I've gone 150 yds. I'm gonna stop and back out. Nothing big but I haven't killed a deer in two years. I've spent 35 hrs in a stand the past 6 days in 4 different areas. This is the first deer I've seen period. Public land.

Pretty good. Not a pass through completely so I hit something hard. Not shoulder. It broke my arrow rolling. I'm shooting FMJs with a Rage. There was a lotta blood where he was laying and rolling.

Re: LFTT 11/7/14 - 11/07/14 09:54 AM

I'm high but I'm not forward or back. I thought I was gonna walk up and put another arrow in him but he has to be on his feet. I hate it too. Second deer ever I've hit high like that.

Second time I drew back on a deer this morning and had my second clean miss. Sent one right over a does back. Had my hha set to 30 and forgot to compensate an inch or so down, she was standing at 20. Also rushed the shot cause they were moving pretty good, need to really take my time next time.

Saw a big buck with a tall rack after 20 minutes in the tree about 70 yards away. Also got my first bow kill officially , but it was a dang coyote. Pretty good shot too, he was moving at a dog trot at 22 yards and I put one thru his chest.

By far the most action I've had on a hunt this year. Saw 4 total plus the tote. Good times! Now I just need to connect with a dang deer. At least this new spot seems to be a honey hole.

Back in the woods this afternoon. Sitting on a plot at the bottom of a ridge with 20 yo pines bordering a hardwood drain and 250 yds off a 400 acre cutover. First sit in this stand. Tracks are everywhere and this field is holding moisture better than most of our plots. North wind in my face at 4-6 with ocassional gusts to 10. Hot pics of a shooter in daylight here, so here we go.

Re: LFTT 11/7/14 - 11/07/14 04:55 PM

I intentionally slept in later than normal this morning, with intentions of hunting mid-day til dark (because of the full moon). I checked 4 cameras this morning, then about 10:00, Dad and I discovered a leak in the roof of the camphouse. We worked on the roof instead of hunting, so my mid-day plan got busted. We got the roof fixed and now we're posted up about 300 yds apart on a hardwood ridge...I feel confident that we will see some deer!

We spooked a doe and twin fawns off of a white oak when we were headed to our stands.

Good luck, everyone!

It end up being 2 bucks sparing didn't get good looks at them but could hear them pushing back and forth about 60 yds to my left in some really thick stuff. There are a few bucks in this spot I would love to shoot. It's a beautiful afternoon in the woods! Hopefully the good Lord will bless me with an opportunity tonight!

What a blessing just to be able to see him, especially when he was rubbing some limbs with those massive antlers. I had a great hunt this evening! I had 2 nice bucks come in behind me to 35 yds, but I never could get a shot. Two small bucks were with them as well, and of course, they took the trail in front of me (in the wide open)...The biggest buck was a 3 year old 9 point that I have lots of pictures of. I'm thankful just to have seen him, but I sure wish I could've gotten a shot off! He's no giant, but this is the biggest buck I've ever had in bow range in 17 years of bow hunting...Maybe I can get on him again tomorrow.

Shaw I tried some of those NAP Killzones like you've been using. I got the cut on contact ones. They didn't make as impressive of a wound as the pics you had the other day but they did open her up pretty good.

Re: LFTT 11/7/14 - 11/07/14 10:04 PM

I prefer the Trophy Tip version. For some reason they seem to cut a little wider. Emmett killed his 8pt with the cut on contact version last Sauturday. It did its job, but the entry hole wasn't a quite as big as the pics I posted a couple of weeks ago. It was still plenty big though. It sliced 3 ribs in two. He didn't get an exit because his bolt buried up in the opposite shoulder. Emmett has shot Rocky Mountain Gators for years and swore by them. When he saw what the Killzone did to my second doe, he wanted try one. Now he's swearing by the Killzones. grin

I've been told that the trophy tips do cut bigger because they push the skin down on impact which in turn creates more skin to cut. Kinda like cutting 3" flat but folded your cutting more due to inward angle of the skin. I can only see that theory coming to light on entry. I imagine all the other compartments receive the same amount of trauma.
