Right Handed/Left Eye Dominant

Right Handed/Left Eye Dominant - 10/30/14 02:27 PM

Need advice from people who have been shooting bows for a while. I'm right handed but left eye dominant and I am pretty sure it is affecting my groups beyond 35 yards. With rifle hunting, anything over 200 yards I will shoot left handed and accuracy is better than trying to shoot right handed over 200 yards. I can pull the same amount of weight back either way. Just really wanted to know if anyone else has this "problem" and what was the final result. I find that I am more relaxed shooting left handed but my reaction time to pull/aim/shoot right handed is extremely faster than shooting left handed and sometimes all you get is a couple seconds for that shot. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I shot that way for a long time. Finely trained myself to use right eye when shooting my bow still shoot shotgun and rifle left handed. (left eye dominant right handed)

Left eye dominant and right handed but have always shot bows, rifles and shot guns left handed. Pistols I shoot right handed but use my left eye. It's what has always been natural/comfortable to me.

699..What was the determining factor for you to decide that you will shoot the bow right handed but everything else left?

Sulli..I tried that with pistol shooting and had horrible groups, I just said whatever and tried left handed and was 2x better. Just have to get the functional movements for handling a pistol with left hand down now.

Do you shoot with both eyes open?

I am in the same boat with that. I shoot rifles and shotguns lefty, but a right-handed bow. I havent really thought about trying my pistol left-handed. Maybe that is why I can't hit anything with it...

My son is left eye dominant and shoots a bow right handed. He closes his left eye.

I am right handed but left eye dominant. I shoot my rifle and shotguns left handed but shoot handguns right handed. I shoot tighter groups left handed and just taught myself to work the actions on the guns quickly and without hesitation now. I still shoot, carry, and draw with my right hand mainly because i haven't put in the time to change the habit yet but anytime I am hunting I use my left eye. I tried shooting a compound bow and finally gave up and bought a crossbow.

I'm right handed and left eye dominate as well. I shoot right handed with both eyes open. In low light I have to squint my left eye or it will take over. I shoot all of my guns right handed as well. I

shoot a pistol right handed and aim with my left eye. I thought I was the only one weird enough to do that, Sulli. grin

Re: Right Handed/Left Eye Dominant - 10/30/14 03:56 PM

DeepWoodsHunter.. I used to shoot both eyes open but now I really concentrate on keeping my left eye closed. And I think that is a part of the problem shooting long distances because short range I shoot both eyes open and I am under 1 MOA, but anything over 30, I think I concentrate so much on keeping my left eye closed that I lose concentration on aiming. I know it may seem that keeping that eye closed isn't a big deal but when it comes to pulling a trigger, that left eye wants to be in on the action.

Right handed and left eye dominant. Shoot all my weapons left handed. Feels nature. I can't close my left eye by itself.

In the same boat as you guys. For several years when using a peep, low-light conditions gave me all kind of fits. When I went to a no-peep sight, things improved for me 100%. I shoot all firearms left-handed.

My nephew is right handed and left eye dominate. He's always done everything right handed but his bow shooting was not very good. When he went to buy a new Hoyt, the dealer asked him to try a leftie. He shoots lights out left handed but still does all other things right handed.

Re: Right Handed/Left Eye Dominant - 10/30/14 11:20 PM

I see this in my job quit a bit. I am not 100% sure if it translates into bow hunting as it does weapons. I teach people with your issue to shoot rifles with the dominance of their eye. That is what I have been taught and while it can be awkward swapping at first in the end you will be more accurate. The reason people can shoot pistol right handed but are left eye dominate is because you can simply move the pistol over in front of your dominate eye. I am not a bow expert by any means but I would bet that if you completely swapped to a left handed bow and go use to it you would be a better shot at all distances.

I'm exactly like Shaw. I started shooting with both eyes open 2 years ago. This has really improved my groups. Like Shaw, in low light I have to squint my left eye to make my right eye focus on my pin, then I can slowly open it back up.

Re: Right Handed/Left Eye Dominant - 10/31/14 09:40 AM

Right handed, left eye dominate here. When I started shooting as a kid it just came natural. Bow right hand use right eye. Handguns right hand, left eye. Long guns, left hand, left eye. I always thought it was natural for a right handed person to shoot a long gun left handed because your strong hand steadies the long gun, with your weak hand mashing the trigger. I never had accuracy problems. Never knew of the dominant eye deal until much later in life. Made me go hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Re: Right Handed/Left Eye Dominant - 10/31/14 09:53 AM

When I was about 9, my dad got a me a Ruger M77 .270 bolt action(only rifle I will ever shoot and still shoot to this day) and when we went to the woods to sight her in I was shooting right handed but rolling my check over so that I was looking through the scope with my left eye. Luckily, my dad said "what the hell you doing boy" before I shot instead of letting me learn the lesson the hard way. I told him this is how I shoot my daisy red rider bb gun and hit every soda can I shoot at. He just laughs and replies "this has a little more kick than a bb gun son." Did one of the many eye dominance tests and it proved that I was left eye dominant. I always thank him to this day for not letting me shoot with my checked rolled over to use my left eye through the scope. He said hell, I didn't have health insurance to pay for you breaking your nose.

Re: Right Handed/Left Eye Dominant - 10/31/14 12:44 PM

I used to to do the same thing with long guns when I was younger, right handed and aiming with my left eye. I was a holy terror on birds with my Red Ryder. It wasn't until my paw paw carried me shooting when I was about 12 or 13 that anyone noticed what I was doing.

He had a Marlin semiautomatic .22 with one of those skinny Tasco rim fire scopes on it. This was my first time to shoot a scoped rifle. When I went to shoot it I was trying to look through that scope with my left eye and of course I couldn't see squat. I said "Paw Paw, I can't see through the scope."

His reply was "Dammit boy, use your other eye." grin

It wasn't until about 1998 when I bought a PSE bow that came with an instructional video that I knew anything about having a dominant eye. I started to make the switch several times to a lefty bow, but the one thing that always stopped me was the Buckmasters Top Bow shoot. You have to load and shoot fast. That just ain't happening for me shooting lefty. Plus since my fall I am no where near as strong on my left side as I am my right. I probably can't pull 50# with my left arm.

Eye dominance is only a problem when shooting both eyes open. If you close your dominant eye you will still hit where you aim.

Me too
I shoot a gun left handed and now right handed. I'm left eye dominant.
