Live from Colorado - 09/17/14 08:16 AM

We leave Saturday morning at 4 AM. There are 7 of us in the party going to southwest CO with the nearest town being Dolores. We will be hunting private property on a trespass fee DIY type deal. The elk tags are over the counter. I have a Muley tag and a couple of guys have bear tags. All archery. Will be staying in a brand new lodge on the edge of the property.

Cell signal sucks out there but I should be able to update each day if I can get the guys to stop on the top of the mountain for a few minutes. Shouldn't be difficult, they all need to check in as well.

Last year I saw elk every day and bulls every day but one. They were bugling up a storm every day. Lots of Muleys. Lots of bear and mountain lions on the place...no black painters.

We will start hunting on Monday and finish up on Saturday. The weather looks like it is going to be moderate this year. Last year we had lots of snow, unreal winds, and cold temps (18 degrees).

Stay tuned.

Good Luck Barry! My daughter and son in law just moved to Denver, so I may start planning trips there over the next few years.

I love CO. I had planned on moving there (summer home) once I retired but instead I started a hog control business that will take up my summers. LOL

Still hope to get out there for an elk hunt each year.

Okay folks, here's an update...

With 1 morning and 1 afternoon hunt under our belts we've been in bulls both times. They are bugling like crazy!

Missed one this morning. When I released the arrow the bull decided to go somewhere else. They moved in right on top of us and we had to get a shot off quick.

Hopefully a success story for you all tomorrow!

Re: Live from Colorado - 09/27/14 03:59 PM

I just got in. Rodney Taylor got a 4X4, another buddy Joe got a 4X5. I missed again. Hit another limb at 25 yards. Just snake bit. Four of the guys are still hunting. Rodney, Bart, I came home early. Thursday afternoon Bart and his guide were slipping in on a bull when they suddenly came across a beef cow/bull (he doesn't really know what it was). They spooked it and it charged and slammed Bart to the ground and rolled him several times. The guide was beating the damn thing as hard as he could and it finally broke off the attack and ran off but not before stepping on his back.

Bart has a very black and swollen left eye and we suspect a few broken ribs. He didn't want to go to the doctor there in fear that they may admit him there. I just dropped him off at the ER in P'ville. The funny thing is he is still laughing.....a little. Just crazy.

Even with the bad finish that cut our hunt short a couple of days, he still had a blast. We drove straight threw coming home. I am beat.

Dang! Drove 1300 miles just to get trampled by a cow!

Sounds like y'all timed the hunt just right though. Public or Private land?
