new bow maybe - 09/16/14 07:42 PM

okay this will be my first year bow hunting and do not want to spend over 400 until I figure if I like it or not. I have been looking at Bass pro and they have a PSE stinger ready to go for 317.00. I was just curious if this will be a good beginner.

not a real good looking bow to me. go on archerytalk.com and you may well find a gently used bow that is much nicer than that one for about the same price.

id say you could get this one for 500 loaded, maybe cheaper. you are gonna like bowhunting if you give it a fair chance. I wouldn't risk the experience by getting an outdated bow because its cheap

There are several bows on craigslist too that are already set up and look to be ready. Might want to check there.

This is my first year bow hunting too, but I plan to stick with it and am already obsessed with shooting and practicing. Based on what all I came across in my research, you'd prob be better off finding a couple year old used bow that will be better than the RTH package you posted.

I went the used route for my first bow two years ago, just to make sure I enjoyed it. Now I'm flipping addicted. Local archery shops usually have bows that are no older than 2 years old at really good prices. And they will have all the goods on em. Buy a half dozen arrows, good release and go at it.

If you are just starting out shooting a bow it is important to get one that fits you. By that I mean the right draw length and weight and properly tuned. A bow is like a pair of shoes, if they don't fit your not going to wear them long. If the bow doesn't fit and not tuned properly you won't be able to shoot it effectvely and may give up on bowhunting early. This doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune to get a good bow. Just get one that fits you.

Re: new bow maybe - 09/17/14 07:58 AM

It's a great first bow. My son shoots a Stinger 3g and there's nothing wrong with that bow. It's a very forgiving bow and shoots flatter at 60yds than my Martin and my friends Matthews. It's got a large brace height and is a little heavier than some other bows, just easy to shoot and accurate. I actually shoot tighter groups with his bow than I do my own. If any archery shop carries the same bow, go shoot it and a few others. For the money, you can't go wrong with it though. The upside to going to a shop that has one is they will set it up for you and you'll avoid some initial issues you may encounter with a mail order bow.

Re: new bow maybe - 09/17/14 08:13 AM

The only archery shop that will carry them will be one that ordered xtras since they stopped making them last year. A shop here ordered 100 of them just because they are fast sellers. If you go to "Hunters Friend" on the internet, you can look at complete packages and they tune the bows before shipping. You'll only need to adjust the sights a bit if anything. I've ordered from them and the bow was spot on out to 40yds outta the case. Just be SURE of your draw length before you order.

Re: new bow maybe - 09/17/14 09:18 AM

Not to discourage you but realistically the $400 is not going to get you very far.

I started last year and bought this partly used setup :

- Used 2004 Pearson Dagger bow $125 (aldeer classifieds)
- Used HHA optimizer single pin sight $75 (ebay)
- New 6 Beaman arrows cut for my bow $70 (local)
- New 6 Rage Extreme broadheads $90 (local)
- New 3 Rage Extreme practice heads $30 (local)
- New QAD rest $60 (local)
- New Tru Glo 4 arrow quiver detachable with extra attachment for my stand $100 (local)
- New Dampers etc ... $10 (local)
- Used TRU Ball Max Pro release $70 (eBay)

I spent a total of $630 including $125 for the bow. I highly suggest you find a good deal on a used bow and look for deals on the accessories on eBay, Amazon, etc... These accessories (other than the quiver and dampers) ARE NOT OPTIONAL and they aren't cheap ... expect to spend $250 to $350 on them

You could also buy the attachment for the quiver to bow and place it on a strap for about $10 or $15 bucks. Then just strap it to the tree if ya don't want to shoot with the quiver on.

Re: new bow maybe - 09/17/14 11:08 AM

Thats what the extra attachment is but I mount it on my climber

Re: new bow maybe - 09/17/14 11:13 AM

Look on Craigslist and I saw a Few on Facebook for around 300-400 Mathews all rigged out. But go to an archery shop first and get your draw length measured first.

And you will get hooked its just gonna happen.

Re: new bow maybe - 09/17/14 11:39 AM

Talltines is 100% correct on that you will be hooked.

Re: new bow maybe - 09/17/14 10:00 PM

I would suggest not buying from a box store. Buy from a archery shop. Much more knowledge and you being a beginner you will need some tuning and fitting as well as many minor adjustments when you start out.

Re: new bow maybe - 09/17/14 10:14 PM

PSE X-FORCE SS is a good deal , but nothing wrong with the Stinger , shoot some bows and get what feels good to you.

Re: new bow maybe - 09/20/14 06:51 PM

Okay I went to a couple bow shops and shot several different bows from elite,to Matthews,to pse and I must say my wife is a champ she said for me to get what feels good I really wanted the elite, but after shooting a hoyt charger I was hooked even though I could have gotten alot more expensive bow the charger fit me good and I felt confident in it,so 713 dollars later thats what I got
