Never shot a 3 d tournament before - 07/05/14 08:48 PM

I've been bow hunting 20 yrs and I've killed a few deer along the way but I've never shot in a tournament .. Tomorrow I'm going to the first 3d shoot I've ever been to .. I'm not sure what to expect .. I bought an elite e 32 this year and I'm shooting better than ever before .. Can I use a range finder ?
How many arrows do I need
What's the distance of targets I will shot ?
My bow is set to hunt .. No scope or any of that ..

It depends on who is putting the tournament on as to what the rules are and wether or not you can use a rangefinder. where is the shoot?

Man, have fun. If you are unsure, start out on the bowhunter novice distances. Take about 6 arrows. Don't let anyone peer pressure you into shooting the longer stakes. If 20-30 yards is what you are used to shooting, go for that and find out what it's about. If you are shooting for fun, move up to a closer stake that YOU are comfortable with. Feel free to take a zero on that target. You ain't out to win, have fun.

That's awesome. I'd love to have/take the time to get back into shooting some 3-D tourneys. I loved it when I was in college. We drove to several states shooting and met some fine people from all over the country, man I miss it!

At BHA tournaments 90%-100% of the 12 rings are in the center of the 10. We don't shoot many upper and lower 12's. Besides, it doesn't matter what your score is. If you want to come out and shoot for kill shots and have fun then that is great. It's all about having fun and getting better at our shooting skills for hunting season.

Bowmania is an indoor 3D tournament held at the Deer Expo at the BJCC July 18,19,20. If I remember correctly, there are 5 shooting lanes and you shoot 2 targets at each lane for a total of 10 targets. You can shoot as many rounds as you like(for a fee of course). Bring your bow in in the case and you leave it there while you walk around the expo.

Why not let guys like him that aren't "serious 3-D shooters" but want to improve their hunting skills use a rangefinder then?

We have 2 classes in the BHA central zone chapters that allow you to use a rangefinder. Or he could use a rangefinder and shoot a fun round(score won't count toward standings). If you want to shoot a fun round, you can do whatever you want.
