Had alarm set for 4:30 but wide awake at 4:15. Ready to get after it! Debating on whether to take the thermacell or not. Think I will…

Y'all get after them. I've got to work a 1/2 day but I'll be in the stand this afternoon. Good luck and wear your harness.

Got the stick bow with me. Haven’t been in here this year. Took a chance and hoped these white oaks were dropping. Sounds like they are. Undecided on whether to mess with a doe today, with the temp being so warm. Guess that will be a game time decision.

Re: LFTW…opening day - 10/14/23 11:43 AM

I sounded like a buffalo walking in and am sweating my arse off, but finally settled in here in Marion County. Oak flat raining big acorns. Wind isn’t ideal but we’ll see. Happy to be here

Re: LFTW…opening day - 10/14/23 11:56 AM

Well got the first bj of the year, not quite sure it was my fault though. Sitting on the edge of a 3 yr old cutover with the perfect wond. Deer coming from the woods behind me and I heard her spook, shortly after heard some racked in the cutover then she starts blowing. Thinking maybe a coyote or something in the cutover spooked her

Got a few days to hunt in Missouri this week. Sitting on a little hardwood finger on a hayfield. There's a creek behind me and a bean field a hundred or so yards a way. 2trails meet on the ridge I'm set up on and head to the bean field. Good luck and stay safe.

Re: LFTW…opening day - 10/14/23 01:30 PM

Seen about 50 on my cams this morning. The boy wants to go sit in a tree this afternoon while I bow hunt. Guess I will have to get the bow off the shelf foe the first time in two years and try and find a target for a practice shot. Or maybe we can find some work to do instead.

Re: LFTW…opening day - 10/14/23 01:37 PM

First opening morning I haven’t hunted in a long time. Just not near as mad at um as I used to be. If that wind shifts around out of the west I might sneak out about an hour before dark. Good luck to those hunting.

Re: LFTW…opening day - 10/14/23 02:17 PM

I just can’t get fired up to go. No good bucks I want to kill on cams and this crappy weather has me sitting at home. May take junior and see what he can do. However, 2 weeks from today we will be prepping for Kansas!

Had a d or at 17 yds just as I was about to draw back she jerked her head to look in the direction she came in from and got nervous so I let her walk in case something better is coming.

Opening day of Bow season in Alabama is over rated at least he got it out of the way before the rut.

I’m spending opening day camping at Wind Creek with the fam. My target buck was out at 7:30 this morning but the wind was wrong to hunt him. Gonna slip out of here and hunt tomorrow once the wind shifts a little more north.

If I had to choose between hunting opening day of Bow season or any weekend in January I would pick January every time. Not saying it’s a bad time to hunt I’m just saying there are worse times to have a wedding. Over rated may have been a bad description, but when I take vacation time to hunt in Alabama it’s in the last 5 weeks of season.

With all that being said. If I didn’t have to work tonight I would have been in the woods today. But I work the next 3 nights so I’ll be out there Wednesday.

I’m right the opposite. 😂
I wouldn’t trade the first week of bow season for the entire month of January.

In a tree. Hopefully one of the 2 eights that’s been consistent in the afternoon will show. Either would be my best bow kill. I’m happy for this NW steady wind.

In GA this evening. Acorns finally dropping. Bucks have disappeared from camera, but that’s normal here. They’ll be following does around in about 10 days.

In a tree for the afternoon hunt…my 6 year old son is hunting with my Dad this afternoon. They’ve got their crossbows ready!! I’m on the side of a foodplot (nothing green due to the drought!) with post oaks raining acorns near me and a corn feeder at 20 yards. Good luck, everyone!!!

Skunked this morning. Beautiful spot. Never have seen/heard so many acorns. Everywhere. Yet I didn’t see the first pile of poop/sign as I was walking out. They’re those big Mountain acorns about the size of a golf ball. You’d think they be all over these things, but nada.

Debating about tomorrow. A) whether to go, and B) stick with the mountain oaks or get mobile

I’ve never seen deer eating them. Maybe if nothing else is falling, but even then I’d find something else unless there’s a ton of fresh sign under them. They are BITTER, and doubtful to kill a deer under one. Time to put your feet on the ground and find something better.

I saw a pile of deer. 5 young bucks ( 4 pt, 6 pt, 6 pt, 8 pt, and a cow horn.) Probably 15 does and yearlings. Maybe the big boys will be on their feet in the morning.

Blessed with a mature buck I’ve been watching since late July. Showed up at 5:20 and was the 8th deer I had in range this afternoon. He won’t win any big buck contest but it sure did feel good to put my hands on one. Happy to text pics if someone will post em.

We had heartbreak this afternoon! Emory got a shot at a good buck and either grazed the deer’s back or leg. My dad couldn’t see where the bolt hit/grazed the deer…We searched for an hour and never found anything other than the two brown hairs that were under the lip of the fletching

i am 72 years old, and this is the first opening day i've ever killed a deer; 9-point youngster, 160 pounds, 20 yards, crossbow, 125-grain Magnus Stinger, complete pass through and into the grass; ran 50-60 yards, turned back toward me, fell over and rolled onto his back, and expired; heavy, heavy blood loss ...
