How long should a bowstring last?

How long should a bowstring last? - 07/28/20 04:39 AM

I have been shooting an Alpine for about 5 years.
Practice with it. Hunt with it. Then put it away till next season.
I can't see any visual wear on it,but am thinking about getting Shaw to build a new one for it.
The other is a Hoyt my nephew gave me recently. I don't know how old the string is,bit I would say over 3 years.
I can't see any defects on it either.
I haven't ever had a now come unwound, but I had a friend who did. He said it was hunting. Up in a tree stand and drawing on a deer when it happened.
Said he almost jumped out of his skin.

It all depends on the amount of shooting you do and how well you maintain them. Thing to remember is most of the time, if one breaks, it will be an end loop or under the serving where a potential problem can’t be seen. On the 5 year old one, it’s time. On the 3 year old one, if it’s a factory set, it’s time.

I replace every two years even if they look good.ill shoot a ton when I get a new bow and end up putting on a new string the next year most of the time. I may have went 3 years on one before but I tend to be a little ocd on my equipment

Glad you asked this question. I got the original string still on my Heli-M. Still looks new but Its a ticking time bomb I'm sure of it. 8 year old string and I haven't been light on it.

I get Larry Odell to check mine every year. Most the time I get 2-3 years out of one. I knew a man that had one come apart on him at full draw and blinded him in his right eye. Get it checked out, ain't worth getting hurt over.

I just now replaced the string on my 2011 Hoyt Alphamax and it’s killed a heck of a lot of deer since then. So 9 years. Lol. I am super OCD about checking my equipment, waxing the string regularly, and I have never had a problem with a string lasting 6+ years. I’ve only shot Hoyt equipment and don’t know anyone who’s had a string issue with one.

I charge between $120 and $150 depending on the bow model for a complete string and cable set installed.

Like Mbrock I'm finally changing my string this year. Bought this bow in 2010 I believe, it was a cheaper ready to hunt package from bass pro. Killed lots of critters with it over the years and never had any trouble until this year when I got it out to start practicing. Peep twist is the issue I'm having, but Shaw is hooking me up with a new string Saturday.

Every 3-5 years depending on how much you shoot and take care of your equipment. The average joe should be set for 5 years.

If your string breaks during the draw cycle you can just about knock yourself out! Let it happen one time and you will be a string changing waxing SOB!

SO. I started this post a couple weeks ago.
Today I went and picked my bow up from Shaw.
I learned a lot. First. Even though my old string looked ok. Or safe.
It was stretched so much that it was causing other problems.
Shaw. It was a pleasure ! Thanks for getting my bow back in shape.
Good hunting to all who jumped in with feedback.
