Heavy arrows - 12/03/19 01:16 PM

For y’all that shoot heavy arrows (500-600gr). What fletching’s do y’all like the best? Should I start with an over spined arrow to begin with? Arrow will probably be a Easton 5mm FMJ and will be 27-27.5” With a 200 gr single bevel broadhead.

Re: Heavy arrows - 12/03/19 02:27 PM

Blazers work good
One trick to building a heavy arrow is to get a higher front of center not just get the overall arrow weight up.
Which in turn reguires less fletching to stabilize the arrow in flight unless your using a real big fixed blade head.
And yes you will start with a stiffer spined arrow and add point weight which softens the spine down
I know you said you was gone use fmj but go to victory arrows web site they a online deal where you build out a arrow and it will give you the recommended spine it ain't specific to there arrows .

lol, I'm shooting 463 out of both bows and punching through elk so, I don't plan on changing anytime soon.

Re: Heavy arrows - 12/17/19 04:47 AM

I’m all for heavy arrows but 600 grains would put me through a live oak. Mines somewhere between 450 to 475 and for a thin deer it’ll punch through both shoulders

Re: Heavy arrows - 12/17/19 11:38 AM

I used to think I had a shoulder puncher set up....570gr arra at 270fps. Then I hit a buck in the shoulder. Penetration not so much.

Ordered some axis 300s. 11.8 gpi I think. They were only $25 for 6 from Lancaster. Gonna put 75gr brass inserts and try 150gr broadheads.

I'm in the process of building my first heavy arrows. I bought some of the grizzly stik momentum TDT 240s a month or so ago. Planning now on tipping them with the grizzly stik 75gr brass insert/outserts and looking hard at either the 200gr Maasai or 200gr Cutthroat broadheads.

I tinkered with 150gr heads and went back to 125 due to the limited options. Double check your head options before jumping. I was back to 125 before season ever started and just went with a heavier insert. If ya like the 150gr head, I say do it

That's good speed at 570. My 70# bows pushing the 468gr at 278 fps in comfort. I could switch to performance and get about another 8fps but, I'm not.
Shoulder bones typically win out it seems. When someone hits a bull in the shoulder, it's obvious from the shot. I watched one go for about 500yds and start rounding up cows lol

Re: Heavy arrows - 12/17/19 03:47 PM

the buck I shoulder shot had come 300 yards straight to my tree an hour after I rattled at him. He turned inward just as I hit the release, resulting in a shoulder hit. He ran, walked 75 yards and lay down. I was waiting for him to drop his head and another buck came and made him get up. He went another 200 yards across a field and lay down on the edge of the field. Recovered him at dark and had to put another area in him to anchor him. Head was a big Simmons very sharp. No such thing as a shoulder buster bow set up.

I may order the Maasai’s.

Exactly. There’s one spot in that shoulder you ain’t getting an arrow through with enough penetration for a lethal hit. All of these folks with these “shoulder buster” arrows haven’t hit it yet.

Right, and the guys up here are trying to make them for elk. You'll punch scapula but not that big bone...

Bringing an old thread back, but a good interview is out there on The Hunting Public's podcast with Troy Fowler, a.k.a. the "Ranch Fairy". He's primarily a pig hunter and outfitter in TX, but the insights and experience he's got hunting with heavy arrows is pretty interesting to listen to.

Yeah, I've watched his stuff. I'm putting together some 612gr. projectiles for hogs.

Re: Heavy arrows - 02/06/20 07:16 PM

I shot a 250 pound boar with a 1 1/2 shield with my 570 grain arra, penetration was thru the near shoulder and stopped at the skin on opp shoulder, he went maybe 20 yards.

I have NO reason to shoot arrows that heavy. 700+ grains be floating in the air too long for my type hunting.

I was looking at these online the other day Troy. What grain broadhead are you shooting?

Re: Heavy arrows - 02/12/20 01:09 AM

Slippin, shooting 180 gr heads. Those heads will stay sharp all season and are like a scalpel sharp.

Re: Heavy arrows - 02/12/20 02:44 AM

What kind of inserts are you heavy arrow fellers using? I’ve never actually built an arrow myself, just bought them from a pro shop cut to length with whatever inserts they installed. I’d like to take a crack at this “hand loading” heavy arrows idea this off season.

Re: Heavy arrows - 02/15/20 07:19 PM

I don't call my arrows heavy, I call them what I require. I want my arrows 450-500gr. Weight for penetration and a flatter trajectory. I'm not planning my hunts on short range shots, so I'm not shooting a 600+ grain arrow. My arrows have a 42gr insert and 125gr tips, total weight 463gr. I have the penetration I need which was proven on my bull this year. I do have some 150gr tip I may shoot at a bear this year, still undecided. I still like to play with arrow weights and my chrono. Y'day I shot 3 weights with 2 different bows.

Compound bow vs recurve are in play as well, no one has really mentioned what type bow they're shooting

Re: Heavy arrows - 02/15/20 07:36 PM

I'm shooting 570gr out of a 52# recurve.

Re: Heavy arrows - 02/15/20 11:31 PM

Current hunting arrows are at 460gr out of a 70 lb compound they will prettyuch shoot through anything I need them to
For our Western trip this fall I'm gone be at around 420 with a pretty good foc and try and gain a lil speed for antelope
