Bobcat this evening

Bobcat this evening - 11/19/17 07:58 PM

Smoked this bobcat with the Elite this evening, there was 2 of them. I shot him @ 30 yds, he ran about 25 yds & piled up. The other cat went over & sat beside him all evening. It was 50 yds, but no way to get an arrow thru there. He's on my list, Robinhedd

Don't think they were friends, they were fighting like heck all evening, I thought it was dogs growling in the thicket until they finally stepped out.

I shot one last year but never found him. Couldn’t believe I got a shot off on him really couldn’t believe I hit him. Nice kill. Congrats

They wasn’t fighting. They was husband and wife bobcats.
That’s a cool kill. You going to mount him?

Nope, maybe I'll mount the other one when I kill it in the morning.
It's amazing how fast an arrow can kill, I'd say he was dead in 3 to 4 seconds. He made about a 20 yard death run before he flipped, then dead right there.
Heck, I think I'll kill him with the same arrow!

Re: Bobcat this evening - 11/20/17 04:55 PM

Nice shot!

Don't want to hijack the thread, so if this needs to be moved please do, but isn't there a regulation in Alabama about taking a bobcat somewhere to get tagged after killing one?

I've taken a shot at a couple but never recovered one.

Re: Bobcat this evening - 11/20/17 05:11 PM

You are supposed to get a tag if you mount it or keep it. I believe it is called a cites tag. If you just toss it there is really no need for the tag.

Re: Bobcat this evening - 11/21/17 02:10 PM

Here is the law.

(3) Tagging Bobcat/Otter Pelts - Persons taking bobcat and otter
must have the fur or pelts tagged by representatives of the
Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries within 14 days of
taking and before the fur or pelt is sold or otherwise disposed of.
(a) However, a licensed fur catcher may sell untagged bobcat
and otter to an authorized resident fur dealer and leave a
completed signed fur tag report with said dealer. The
dealer must then have the bobcat and otter tagged by a
representative of the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater
Fisheries within 14 days of purchasing bobcat or otter pelts.
(b) Legally acquired bobcat and otter pelts or carcasses may be
delivered untagged to a resident taxidermist for mounting if
the owner leaves a completed, signed fur tag report with
said taxidermist. The taxidermist must then have the
bobcat and otter tagged by a representative of the Division
of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries within 14 days of
taking delivery of said pelts and transmit the completed fur
tag report to the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater
Fisheries representative at the time the pelt or carcass is
tagged.
(c) Tags may be removed from bobcat and otter pelts when
processed by a taxidermist for mounting. However, the
removed tag must remain with the mounted specimen when

Re: Bobcat this evening - 11/21/17 09:11 PM

You have 14 days I believe to report it. I think you have to take it in or meet a GW to tag it.

I think that's only if your keeping the pelt, anybody else chime in on this? How about you BhamFred?

Re: Bobcat this evening - 11/22/17 08:55 AM

yeah, the way that reads to me is that it doesn't matter if you're keeping it or not... it's gotta be tagged regardless.

Re: Bobcat this evening - 11/22/17 09:04 AM

It doesn’t say “if you want to keep it”. Says it is REQUIRED to be tagged

Just so you won't worry about it any more, I called my local game warden. If you are not keeping the animal or any part of it, you do not tag it, as long as you dispose of it by legal means. ( burying it on your own private land or pay to dispose of it in a landfill)

Thanks, Robinhedd

Interesting. I've always been told they had to be tagged regardless. Thanks for the info Robinhedd.

Re: Bobcat this evening - 11/22/17 10:10 AM

Thanks for clearing that one up. Wonder why you have to tag to keep but don’t if you trash it

Re: Bobcat this evening - 11/22/17 01:21 PM

The way I understand it is that the tag is a cites tag from the feds and has to do with endangered or restricted species and since the bobcat pelt looks like some other endangered or threatened species they tag it if you plan to keep it, mount it or sell the fur to document that it is not an endangered or restricted species if it gets checked somewhere down the line. That's the way it was explained to me, and the dcnr doesn't want to waste time or resources tagging animals that aren't kept.

Correct, otter is the same way. For future reference if you do keep the pelt and need the tag, you can call your local gw office and they will take your license number and mail the tag to you.

Thanks for that info, AUcoonhunter. That might come in handy when I whack that other cat. Thx, Robinhedd
