LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 06:15 AM

Set back up in the same spot as yesterday morning. Good luck to everyone out here this morning.

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 06:45 AM

I’m hunting a spot on cahaba where I’ve seen deer before. This is the first time I’ve hunted it this season. I’m in some big thinned pines about 25 yards off a firebreak. I found this spot late in the season last year and the bucks had tore the firelane up with scrapes and rubs. There’s already a couple scrapes and new runs so I’m hoping a buck slips through on his way to bed.

Just shot a buck!!!!! 10 yards, slightly quartering to me. I am 30’ up this pine so
It was a steep angle and he toted the arrow off with him. Penetration looked good. This would be first racked buck ever and first buck with a bow (xbow)

Good deal!.....Just keep sitting there and talking to us. He may be laying out there dead or he may be standing 100 yards away bleeding out.
Posted By: CNC

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 08:27 AM

Dang it!....I think we lost him. grin

Edit: The deer might very well be laying out there dead but this does not sound like an ideal shot. You’re likely not gonna find much blood with a high entry and no exit so you definitely don’t want to push him. If he was angled toward you then your angling back into the guts. You probably need to back out and give this deer several hours. I’m sorry to hi-jack the thread….I just hate for you to lose him.

This is killing my OCD…… grin

Hopefully…..it’s getting grimmer by the minute though. I’m picturing him on an all-out search right now. We gotta figure out a way to help folks get control of their excitement after the shot and not start chasing after them. It’s hard not to do. I’m still in favor of branding folks with a dunce cap in their avatar. grin grin

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 09:23 AM

Good luck Southwood7. I shot mine at 10 yards and above the shoulder. The arrow stayed in and didn't exit. The deer was dead within about 60 yards and was an easy blood trail to follow in the dark. This has been the case everytime with this type shot placement for me. I hope it's the same for you.

Im set up in a ground blind right now. Usually alot of deer traffic on this gas line. If i see one it will be a 25yd shot or less. Hopefully less.

It is funny. I do laugh about it too but right now im pretty frustrated. After the shot yesterday i was actually encouraged a little because i knew what i did wrong. Today...no excuse. I wont even disclose how close she was but it was sickening. Cant decide about tomorrow. Its go in the morning or done for the week. Cant go tomorrow evening.

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 09:05 PM

Don’t get frustrated, you’re getting shots now. Make sure you’re aiming in the lower 3rd on them nannerheads because 99.9% of them will jump the string. After I got into tournament shooting I struggled missing them high because I was aiming at them like the 3D targets.

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 09:07 PM

I can tell you I have gave a bunch of bucks buzz cuts the last few years. I mean three good ones. What’s funny is I am shooting 50 percent on bucks and 100 percent on does. I am either doing two things. Don’t bend at the waist or I’m trying to see the arrow hit. This year while practicing I keep telling myself after every shot, bend shoot and follow through. Hopefully it helps me.
What do you think you are doing wrong.

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 09:25 PM

I just cant settle myself down enough to make the shot. Yesterday i had a little time to study the situation more before the shot. I had to control my breathing a little and when she got to a certain mark i knew was 30yds i took it. Had 4 does in the field so didnt want to risk being spotted so took the longer shot. Left/right the shot was perfect but she ducked it. Didnt shoot low enough.

Today as bad as i hate to admit it she was 14yds out. I went to where she stood and ranged my blind and it was 14yds. I just jacked up the shot. She didnt even have time to jump or duck. It was over her and gone before she even flinched. She was a little spooky at first when she seen my blind but still didnt even have time to do anything when i shot. I just flat out missed high. Again.

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 09:25 PM

Shooting deer is mental……We can talk about mechanics until the cows come home but you have to learn to grab ahold of yerself mentally when that deer comes in and make yourself go through a step by step process like a robot…..not like an emotional human. Take a deep breath and go to a different place in your mind…….Control your breathing and focus on the spot you want to hit……squeeze your finger and don’t jerk it…..Be confident.
Posted By: Shaw

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/14/17 09:29 PM

Hang in there. You’ll connect before long. Come up with a checklist and talk yourself through each step before taking the shot. Hell, I’ve missed them at 12 yards.

Where's all the damn buck pics from today
Posted By: sluggun

Re: LFTT 11/14/17 - 11/15/17 12:07 AM

Don't beat yourself up to bad about it. Hell I've missed two 130's this year. Like Shaw said make a checklist and focus on it and not the deer. Until you kill one try to keep your shots under 30 yards and at 30 use your 20 yard pin. Hold on the bottom third and the deer will do the rest. When you get to full draw make sure your sight is centered in the peep, level is level, your using the right pin and pick a spot and focus on that spot. Don't drop your arm to see where the arrow is going. Focus on these things and not those knees knocking together. And I've got Shaw beat. I missed one at 8 yards one morning and killed him at 52 yards when he stopped to figure out what just happened. I'd suggest you take a few practice shots to make sure that there's no equipment problems and to get your confidence back before you head out on the next hunt. Stay after it, it will all come together.
