Need some professional help with this one (long read) - 10/19/17 08:47 PM

Okay so where i went today was about 650 yards from where i parked. I found a small creek like a foot wide and walked up it but it had breaks where there were leaves and bamboo. Im about half way there when i bump a doe and she wont stop blowing at me but she never winded me thanks to the milk weed that i was using and i knew my wind the whole time. So she is just blowing away not knowing what I am i have a ridge to my left and the wind is blowing from that direction. After 30 minutes of fooling around with her she finally goes behind the ridge and I start walking towards my spot and its fool proof. the small creek splits off and there are 2 trees facing a ridge where water oaks are dropping and the thermals are keeping my sent from going towards the ridge and keeping my sent from hitting the ground (again found this out from the milk weed). I unload my sticks from my climber and I have one stick on the tree and I am about to put the second one on when i see something get up in front of me about 50 yards away (it was about 4 in the afternoon). Im secured to the tree with my line mans belt and I have a climbing stick in my left hand, the deer gets closer and comes from behind a big pine tree and that's when I saw him a old brown tine 9 pointer and I am stuck to the tree with my stick in my hand and my bow on the ground.I don't know what to do then to make things worse an old grey doe comes trailing about 10 yards behind him matching him step for step. Now I have to worry about 2 sets of eyes on me with the sun at my back. Now this buck is on the leeward side of the ridge feeding with the wind at his back and this is what I was setting up for. I finally get my bow up and i put the stick in between my legs (while all of this is going on I forget to range find him) It looks about a 40 yard shot and I swing around and go to full draw with my 40 pin right above the heart and then I let it fly. It looks like a perfect shot then it gets to the buck and I see about 4 inches of daylight from the underside and my heart drops. I missed and later found out it was a 46 yard shot. I would have been there on time if I didnt run into that doe. But I am happy because everything played out the way I thought it would and it was a great learning experience. The thing is should I have let it walk and see if I could hunt it another day ? Also when should I go back in and go after this buck he looked like wide high tine 9 pointer but my heart was racing and I could not count all of the tines while I was hanging there lol I need yalls help on this one

You're making this way too complicated. Just go back and hunt when you have a good wind. I've seen mature deer killed the day after they were missed with a rifle in the exact same spot. Actually, have had that happen multiple times in clubs I've been in. Not sure what milk weed has to do with anything. Sounds like you are pulling a smells and over analyzing things, remember it's just a dang pine goat.

milk weed shows how the thermals are reacting with the wind. But thanks i think I am going back next week after the rain comes through

You've been watching to many hunting shows. Deer ain't that damn smart. Get back in there early and try him again. He's not the only one in there. You need to be setup long before the deer decide they want to be there.

Same. Don’t over analyze. Get a good wind and get after him. By the way..nothing in deer hunting is “full proof”.

I know how you feel. I missed a big mature 9 point last year with my bow. It was probably less than a 20 yd shot. I just got anxious and didn’t get to my draw position like I had practiced and rushed the shot. Sounds like you did a good job just to be able to get a shot off though.

yea if they cam from behind me i would have been busted but the thermals from the flowing creek was making my scent rise and counter acting the wind flow. But it was a fun hunt for sure. I have seen deer everytime this year but ive been hunting this public for 3 years and these are the only deer i have seen other than the 6 does i saw last bow season

Thank y'all for the advise I'm going back in next Tuesday and trying after the rain coming in. Today I'm going to go to this other spot that I think might hold some mature bucks
