How long do you shoot?

How long do you shoot? - 06/24/17 08:23 PM

I know it's been asked how often you shoot, but when you practice, how long do you shoot?

I shot today for the first time in a while, and fatigued real fast. I figured I should stop before I lost an arrow or picked up a bad habit.

I plan on shooting as much as I can in the coming months. I want to make sure that, if I don't get a deer with my bow this year, it has nothing to do with my shooting.

I have yet to get a deer with my bow. I shot today for the first time since February. I was trying to sight in my bow because I just put a new pin sight on it today and also just recently had the draw length adjusted so I didn't shoot but maybe 10 times. I'm going to try and plan on shooting 10-15 arrows a day at close range to really practice on form and then after 3 weeks of doing that im going to start shooting distance. This is my plan any ways. I'm real determined to knock one down with my bow this year

I usually start shooting a couple weeks before season opens. Shoot two arrows a day. One before work and one after. Works for me but been at if 45 years, only 41 for whitail though. wink

If it's been a long time since shooting, I will shoot about 6 arrows 3-4 times throughout the day for about a week, then move it up to 12 shots 3-4 times a day for about a week, then I'm pretty good to shoot till I get bored

Sometimes I shoot 15-20 times in a evening but I feel like I get more out of shooting one shot at a random distance. I also sit on a piece of fire wood like im shooting from a blind.

nearly every day till season starts and will
Back down some when it starts.
Just enjoy shooting.

About 15 min per session - about a dozen arrows - a couple times a week.

I shoot a 3D target - sometimes out a lock-on in my backyard.
It really helps my getting my firing sequence down.

Bob Sheppard's book recommends only a single arrow per session. His reasoning is that when you shoot a deer it'll be your first shot. I don't do that, but he's killed thousands.

Once you have your bow zoned in and you are comfortable shooting, it's the first that counts. If that one is crappy you better practice longer.

Well I guess I'm good, because my first shot is always dead on and then the following shots of awful! rofl

I shoot between 30 minutes to an hour and half every day. Just depends on whether I'm working that day or not.

I don't really practice for a set amount of time, I guess it takes me 30 minutes to do, but I shoot 5 arrow rounds. I like to shoot 2 sets at 30 yards than 2 sets at 40 yards and 1set at 50 yards.

I only have 3 arrows right now, so 3. Danged things are expensive.

The price of all the other crap that you need to go WITH the bow far outweighs the cost of the bow itself in the long run.

Ill start shooting again in August. Ill start at 20 yards to get loosened up the first few times but I generally shoot at 40 yards and work my way to 20.. Shooting 5 arrows at each distance.

I usually try to shoot 5-10 times at most, and just do it very often. Really, it's that first one that counts anyway, if you're practicing like a real-world hunting situation. a "cold shot", if you like.

Re: How long do you shoot? - 07/02/17 10:56 PM

I start shooting late July, check my equipment and all pin settings then I shoot 5 arrow groups at 30, 40, then 50 every other day. Then two weeks before season I'll shoot all pins again with broad heads and recheck zero. I rarely practice inside 30, the way I look at if I can shoot tight groups at 30 plus inside 30 will be boring. Works for me.

Shooting daily and have extended out to longer
Distance and treat each shot like it's the only shot.
The more I practice the more natural that first shot
Is and accuracy has increased

Definitely quality over quantity when it comes to shooting.
I probably shoot 10-12 times 3-4 times a week just before season.
Keep shooting once season opens to stay in form.
I carry a "squirrel" arrow with me hunting in case the deer hunting gets slow.

Re: How long do you shoot? - 07/04/17 12:25 PM

I only shoot trad bows anymore, and not too much of that since I hurt my shoulder about 5 years ago. When I was doing serious competition,I would shoot 100 arrows every day.

20 minutes once a week during summer. Just enough to not lose my anchor point & not get rusty with my release pressure. 10-15 yards in my backyard just to remember the right stroke and anchor point. Don't want to piss the neighbors off in the city. Never found that I was missing. 3 weeks before season I'll shoot every other day for about 20-30 minutes max. More important I'll get in the stand & shoot at a target up at my hunting property wearing my hunting clothes 3-4 days before season to avoid putting the pin too low or high from an elevated position. Besides my Matthews is keeblerized so I ain't going to miss! grin
