I shot a buck 2 yrs ago where I thought it was a shoulder shot but it had gone three and hit the other shoulder causing the arrow to come back out at entry. Looked like the deer only had an inch of arrow sticking out. Only went 60 yrds.

No blood, no deer. Finds a new pack of nockturnals laying on the ground, trips over them and cuts himself on one of his broadheads.
Good luck Honey Lou Lou!

Blood and hair for 75 yards, stops there, picks back up the trail at 100 yards, then jumps the buck at 200 yards and he gone forever.

Re: Just shot a nice (for me) 8. (Hit him in the shoulder). - 11/16/16 12:11 PM
Shoulder shot deer bleed well. I'm calling moderate blood starting 30-40 yds from shot, arrow fell out at 100yds, moderate blood till 250-300yds, before it clots.
Hopefully I'm wrong and it punched through.

The arrow being broken off is promising but that’s still a little iffy if you’ve been 400- 500 yards. You just gotta hope that it penetrated enough to get through the shoulder plate and into the body cavity. What county are you in? Are you remotely close to me?

Re: Just shot a nice (for me) 8. (Hit him in the shoulder). - 11/16/16 11:04 PM
Ok, time to be serious. That is one heck of a buck... have you got a dog headed your way first thing in the morning? I sure hope so. Get that dog in there, get out of his and his handler's way, and let that dog do his thing. I would think if you got 8" into the shoulder, then the broadhead should be deep enough to get into one of his lungs. Hopefully he will lay overnight and die. Now for the bad part... if you get a dog and you track through 3 or more bed down areas after the point where your 500 yard track ended, then you probably ain't gonna find him.
Hoping for the best!

That is not a finger print. When you take a picture of a computer screen or tv, lines show up that repeat in a pattern that cannot be seen by the human eye.

Don’t write it off just yet. If he can get someone out there this afternoon then you never know. It’s really pushing it to try to track one that old……. but if Ammon is coming out, he has a good dog that would have as good of a chance of finding it as any. It could just be 50-100 yards past where he lost blood. Good luck!

If my cur had not been hit by a car 5 years ago I would be happy to show it to you. He did that and longer enough times to show it wasn't a fluke.
The sad thing is the brother to, son of and grandson of the same dog is probably only a few miles from Honey right now. No way John Payne would put him on a deer though - he's a squirrel dog and nothing else.

Being this dry is a bad thing but a strong rain will wash the trail away completely and makes it a terrible thing.

I’m not saying that it isn’t possible.…..but it’s just not accurate to make it seem like a 3 day track is routine for any decent dog out there. It takes a special dog to be able to find deer after that long and it also takes the right conditions for it to be possible. We are under just about the absolute worst conditions possible right now. If they’re able to find it this afternoon after 36 hrs in this kind of drought then it’ll be something special for the dog and handler to really be proud of.

I may have been spoiled with Jeb Stuart and his son Colonel Moseby. I probably shouldn't say things that could be considered inflammatory either. I did not mean it that way but I could see how it might be taken as such.
I don't have as good a context as I should. I had never even heard of a tracking dog when I discovered the ability in my OMCBA and Kemmer curs. I've not known any trackers since other than the guys on here to make comparisons to.

Copying my reply from the Blood Trailing page:
Christian Westen Update: I took my buddy's dog out there and bumped three different deer from three different locations within 200 yards of last blood. The dog I took is not a tracking dog but can sure as hell get on some deer. I may have ruined the scene out there but I had to try because most of you boys were working till late this afternoon. If I had waited we would have been pushing 36 hours of the time of the shot. It is dry as hell and in the mid 70's yesterday and likely to be in the 80's today. You boys know better than most that these are terrible conditions. Having said all that you have all shown tremendous kindness in calling back and offering suggestions. Most only charge basically cost and it is clear that you all do this cause you love it. I growed up bird huntin' so I know the feeling of working dogs.

If you can get a dog on it this afternoon - I would try.
If no luck, start walking concentrically larger circles from last blood four yards (or less if too thick to see the ground) apart. Mark the circles as you walk them.
I don't have a good light with me but I'm halfway to you. Let me know if you find it before 4:00pm. If not, I'll head out that way and drink your bourbon while I bark orders at the searchers.

There's probably a 50/50 chance that this deer is still alive.....just something else to keep in mind. If you were up in a tree above the deer shooting down into the shoulder plate at an angle then it's possible that it just buried up in the shoulder.
