LFTT 10/28 - 10/28/16 06:43 AM

It's warm but I'm in a tree. I'm in my climber in an oak flat between a hay field and some thick pines. I've got pictures of a good buck coming through here in the daylight hours. Good luck guys!

I'm in my climber in a hardwood bottom, hoping that a good buck will come through and get him some white oaks. Good luck, everyone! It sure is a nice, calm morning.

Good luck everyone! Didn't go out again. Got some exams today, gotta get those done. Might go fishing again after. I miss being in a tree, but the only days I've seen the deer were the cooler ones.

Re: LFTT 10/28 - 10/28/16 07:35 AM

I just had a good sized bobcat come in on me, but I couldn't get a shot...He got to 25 yards and I drew when he was behind a few big trees. He turned left about 15 seconds later (I needed him to turn right or continue on straight ahead) and it was too thick to shoot. Dang!

Just shot under a baby coyote. Looked like one adult and 4 pups.

Are you in the spot between the clearcuts?

Nope. Up on some private land in Marion County.

I've hunted the other spot once and heard a bunch of hogs, but could never see them.

I'll be at it on a white oak ridge about 3 o'clock this afternoon. Can't wait!

Re: LFTT 10/28 - 10/28/16 09:15 AM

Just had a doe and two fawns slip through about 80 yards to my left. I thought deer were supposed to be lazy and cross fences where it's low (where I am) rather than jump them! lol Glad to see fawns as I haven't seen any this year on camera.

Re: LFTT 10/28 - 10/28/16 09:24 AM

I bumped three up this morning walking in. They eased off without blowing, but I haven't seen any more deer since. Right now I'm covered up in squirrels. Have been most of the morning.

Ended up seeing six and heard a couple of others in some thick stuff behind me. Not a bad morning.

I'm set up on an oak ridge with some decent acorns dropping. Bumped 4 outta here about 3 o'clock a couple days ago when I was in here to check a camera. Trying for does or bucks this afternoon.

Set up on the dirt plot for this evening.

Re: LFTT 10/28 - 10/28/16 04:15 PM

Set up on a dirt plot as well. Got a couple of live and water oaks behind me that are dropping sporadically. About the only oaks on this property. So thick around them it will be a tough shot. I've been craving some fresh fried back straps so the does better watch out!

Regardless I'm glad to finally be back in a stand. Good luck to those giving it go this afternoon.

Re: LFTT 10/28 - 10/28/16 06:24 PM

Had doe within 20 yards for probably 20 mins. Finally gave me shot at maybe 15 yards. Heard a good thump but couldn't see the arrow. Thought I heard her fall but not positive. Took a compass reading where I last heard her. Will slip out and wait at least 30 more minutes before I start looking. It's so dang thick in here I certainly don't want to push her if she is hit.

Re: LFTT 10/28 - 10/28/16 10:21 PM

Success! Climbed down right at dark. Immediately found my arrow. It was covered in blood but also had a lot of indications of a hit in the gut. The deer was quartering to me so wasn't too concerned. No problems following the blood for the first 25 yards (even for a colorblind chump like me). Then the blood just stopped. So I'm down on the ground in this thicket searching for blood and the yotes start in. One probably less than 200 yards from me. Part of me was a little nervous since I was unarmed and the other part of me couldn't help but think "man this is cool...this is why I love to be out in the woods!"

I was a little concerned that the yotes might find the deer before I did so I marked the last blood and walked out to my truck. Drove the truck almost right to the stand hoping it might scare off the yotes. Walked back in to the last blood and started making a few small semi-circles to see if I could pick up any more sign. Luckily on about the 3rd pass I found her.

Shot was even closer than I thought. Less than 10 yards. Hit right where I was aiming clipping the back of the front shoulder and the arrow exited low in the front part of her stomach. The stomach had plugged the exit wound was the reason the blood trail got skimpy. She probably only went about 50 yards.

First deer with the grim reapers and I'm happy with the results! Won't have time tomorrow but fresh back straps are on the menu for Sunday!

Flash on camera phone wouldn't work so the only pic I have isn't very good however if someone will PM me that can post it I will be happy to share.

Thanks fellows. Been deer hunting for 35 yrs now and still get excited to sling an arrow at a scruffy ole doe. Hope that feeling never goes away.
