Restoring a bow

I got my dads compound bow. He bout it in the mid 80's . It's a bear but that's all I know. I'd like to restore it to useable condition. I know the string can be made but I am a little worried about the limbs as the finish is flaking off but not sure if they are cracked etc. any one ever done a similar project or know where I can find more info on bow?
