Shot Placement Question

Shot Placement Question - 01/31/16 11:42 PM

I realize this was a terrible shot. I was on the ground sitting on a stool and the deer was slightly up hill from me aND slightly quartering away. The arrow went right here and came out the other side a couple of inches forward and a few inches higher. One of the blades nicked her stomach, but no major major organ damage. My question is, if I had made this same shot with my 30.06 or 270, do you think I would have killed her? I think the large entry and exit wounds are the only reason she died. At some places on the trail, she lost decent amounts of blood. But most places were very small drops. Would a rifle leave any where near the same size wound as the 2 inch Rage did? Don't deer usually survive a gut shot?

I don't see a picture...

But quartering away shots are tricky but you should get a decent amount of lung.

Sorry, I forgot to attach the pic. But I was nowhere near the lungs.

To answer your question about gut shot deer, they always die.

You most likely clipped a vein or artery running just below the backbone. And, yes a rifle shot would have most certainly been lethal.
