Thinking about getting back into Bow hunting

Thinking about getting back into Bow hunting - 01/31/16 12:53 PM

I haven't had a bow for almost 15 years. The last new bow I bought was a Proline in the mid 90's. I have a short draw length(27.5). I'll more than likely be buying 2(1 for me one for my son), I'd like to stay in the 5-800.00 range for each bow. I've always wanted a Matthews but I'm interested in opinions.

Just all depends on what you are looking for. Mission is made by Mathews and they fall in that price range. Most of the top of the line bows will be between 800 and a 1000. Plus all your accessories. If you want to go the used route there are some nice deals on bows from time to time on here. I got Mathews Switchback XT I'm thinking about selling. As far what brand bow, there are lots of nice ones. When I buy new I go and shot as many different ones as I can.

Bowtech, Mathews, PSE, pretty much everyone, all have nice mid range bows. Hit a few shops and shoot the different models and pick the one most comfortable to you. I have the Bowtech Carbon Icon and have zero complaints. Smooth, fast, and quiet. My son shoots a solid limb PSE Stinger 3G and that thing has some punch to it. Seems a lot better than the newer Stinger X with the split limbs. Best buddy has a Mathews and he loves it. Kinda like the Ford, Chevy arguments...

Buy used and save 50-75%. Other than that, buy whatever fits you. They have the kinks worked out of nearly all of them.

Agree. If you haven't shot one in 15 years, you're gonna be blown away. Archery has come a long way since then. I'd jump all over that Switchback XT that Clark mentioned if he's serious about getting rid of it. It might be the single best all around bow ever made. Welcome back to the addictive sport of bowhunting!

I agree as well. I have a 2001 High Country split limb. I got abut $300 in it. I wanted a newer one but it didn't seem smart having never shot one before. So I've been using it for a couple of years. I killed my first deer with it last week. I'll probably keep it another year or so and pass it to one of my boys. It seems to me bows are like cell phones. They have a new one each year and some guys upgrade every other year or so. Just looking around on Craigslist, you can always find good deals on 2 or 3 year old bows with accessories.

A lot of guys, myself included, don't like Mathews because they have big grips that are easy to torque. You may want a grip that you can shoot off the risor. New Breed Archery is made right here in Bham and has a lifetime transferable warranty. Their bows are as good as any I have shot, and I go through bows pretty quick. The New Breeds are very forgiving too. The factory is at Grabows right in Fultondale on 65/31.

Also, That PSE Stinger ready to hunt package at bass pro is great for $400. Maybe the best value in the business.

^this

Archery unlimited in prattville has a great used section. A lot of people want to trade in bows every other year and you can get a great top of the line bow that someone sank $1500 into for $500-600 fully ready to hunt

And a place like that can make it fit you

The newer Mathews use a much smaller grip than the older models. Also you can buy after market grips for most bows.

You are correct about New Breed. Nice bows.
