stone buffalo... - 03/22/11 10:47 PM

I've been waiting for the time to try one of these monsters....late Jan it all came together. I owned two(now one wink ) buffalo bulls to put in the freezer. I decided to use my Dwyer Defiant longbow and a stone pointed arra. The bulls were in a large rough pasture and NOT tame or approachable. I made a 300 yard stalk and came up below the crest of a drop off to within 30 yards of them. They started walking my way and at 15 yards I launched a hickory shafted arra with a self knapped Texas point.....

I hit him thru the left shoulder into the lungs, he wheeled and ran back to the right. I launched a second hickory shaft with a Coastal Plains Dalton style point attached, hitting the running bull a wee bit back...point broke on a big rib and penetrated only six inches.

But the first arra had done the deed, the eight year old, 2000#, bull went maybe 250 yards and down.....

Thats my grandson Dylan, along to help drag the bull out to the truck laugh shocked He will tell you he is now a Buffalo hunter.....

one of THREE freezers holding buffalo meat...prolly 600 pounds of all cuts.

hide drying with salt , to be tanned. Prolly 75-80 sq. feet.

I'm going to go eat one of those buffalo burgers right now..... cool

That is trully awesome. I can really appreciate your skills in both hunting and knapping. I have a few points similar to those that I found over the years. Just goes to show stone can cause as much damage as surgical steel. thumbup

RCHRR, I've found that the stone points do better than the steel points IF they are made of good raw stone and hold together. They are very sharp.

Troy, just so you know. This post made it into classroom lectures across the world. Ofcourse, there has been some criticism about using a Dalton atlatl dart point on an arrow. A lot of folks called me a bold faced idiot when I told them that you could kill a deer with those little points we have been working on ... I showed them this post. They shut up.

Re: stone buffalo... - 03/25/11 11:49 PM

thanks Skinny

I just happen to like Daltons so I made one up to shoot on an arra, full knowing they were NOT shot on arras

I've seen a deer killed with a field point(accident) thru the lungs...no cutting edge at all.

The world is full of narrow minded idiots...... laugh

Re: stone buffalo... - 04/02/11 08:58 PM

finally got a pic of the second, failed, stone point. Made of raw Coastal Plains chert, I suspected it was not as strong as the raw Texas chert the first arrow toted. I guess I was right....

The point has a pretty good impact fracture taking off the point(1/2") and down one whole side. It hit a BIG rib and penetrated maybe 5-6 inches. Notice the binding, natural sinew, held tight without moving.

gotta go eat a burger, later....

Re: stone buffalo... - 04/03/11 02:04 AM

What states have buffalo season this time of year? Most of us just hunt ole whitetail deer.

Quick search shows South Dakota seems to.

Re: stone buffalo... - 04/03/11 12:17 PM

You can hunt Bison at varying times depending on the state, prolly 90% of the states have no closed season on em. Most hunt em in the colder winter months when the hides are best.
