Heading to Perdido KY FL, any tips? - 03/28/23 03:52 PM

Heading down for spring break and my wife and i’s 10 year anniversary! Any tips on Perdido Key FL area? I figured I’d fish off the beach while the kids played and wife lays around lol! Going to try and get ahold of some sand fleas, I’ve got some fishbites and try pompanos and whiting in the surf. Any other areas worth hitting that are within 10-15 mins. Thought ab hitting Perdido pass but wasn’t sure if the west side was open to bank fishers since they had the construction going on last time I was down, also looks like a spot you can fish by Perdido Key bridge at Dolphin Pass I have no clue about tho! Any help would be much appreciated!

Also any recommendations on good places to eat? We usually stay in gulf shores and that’s not too far of a drive but this is our first time going to perdido key!

Leave Sunset Grill alone. Pure trash for food. The Point is good, period. I have a sand flea trap if you want to come by and get it.

We are about to leave here shortly or I’d definitely borrowed it from you! I’ve got a minnow net I’ve seen videos of people using them to catch them too!

Glad you said something bc I was wanting to try Sunset Grill!

Yeah, the Point restaurant doesn't look like much, but the food is pretty damn good.

Lilian Pizza is damn good too if yall are in the mood for that kinda meal.

I hate to hear that. We like Sunset Grill. Their patty melt (without onions for me) is my favorite restaurant burger. Peel ‘n eat shrimp are always great and we usually order a couple extra lbs to go. To be fair, my father in law and Mr.Tom are good friends so I’m sure that helps with our experience. Was there anything in particular or just bad service/food in general? I’ll be glad to pass on any constructive criticism. Good business owners should always be looking for ways to improve.

You will want to eat at Fishermans Corner and go out Johnsons Beach, I hear the whiting are biting pretty good

FRESH Peeled pieces of human consumption quality shrimp should be in the mix. I tie my own 2-hook bait rigs using 15lb. Fluorocarbon. Pompano are sight feeders and can be "Hardware Shy". So......don't use a 3-way swivel for your drops.....tie them using about an 8" twist of the main line. Rig ends up being a 1" to 3" Pyramid sinker on bottom.....up about a foot is a drop......up another foot is a drop......up say 4" tie a loop(No Swivel) for your reel line to be tied to. Learned this Rigging 30 plus years ago fishing for Pomps in the Florida Panhandle(Walton County-----Inlet Beach). Forgot....use a short shank bait hook about twice as Big as a typical Bream Hook....but MUCH Heavier. Report Back!!

Another vote for Fisherman's Corner. Be prepared to arrive early or wait though. It's a small place.

I haven't had any bad experiences at Sunset Grill. Admittedly haven't been in about a year. It's good quick food in an open air setting with a nice view. I was actually less impressed by the Point but that was a several years ago now.

The Point and Fisherman's Corner are on my regular rotation there, had the best damn grouper I can remember at Fisherman's Corner last week. Oyster bar is good too. I quit turning left out of the condo and having to sit in FloraBama traffic a long time ago. It's actually quicker to get to downtown Pensacola where there's a ton of great choices than to head west into OB or Gulf Shores at dinnertime because of traffic at the Flora Bama.

As for fishing updates, check on Pensacola Fishing Forum for latest reports. Pomps are coming in find a good cut and fish it. Go to Sam's in OB and ask Chris V what's biting and where. Get a breakfast biscuit while you're there.

Didn't get a chance to fish while I was down last week, the seas were a little rough but I saw folks bringing some in. Had hoped to take the boat into the gulf but the weather just didn't cooperate.

I usually rig my drop rigs with red beads above the hook, or every now and then a small sponge float just on one drop to see where they're hitting. I've had more luck on sand flea fishbite than any other bait. Can tip with a small piece of shrimp.

The point also has good live music at night and makes for a fun night. fisherman's corner had about an hour wait when I was there so I ordered to go and they had it in 15 minutes.

Go to Hub Stacey's for the best burger around or a damn good breakfast.

The best fish I ever had was a whole blackened pompano at the Pointe. But that was a LONG time ago and I don't know if that cook is still around.

I only fished the beach one day and only caught catfish, talked to several people that didn’t catch anything from the beach but did watch one of those guys land a nice pompano, I fished the west side of the pass at Orange Beach bridge Thursday morning and landed these 3 Spanish mackerel and lost 3-4 more! Everyone was catching them Thursday morning then took my daughter Friday morn and nobody caught anything!

Was limited in the condo but I found a thing of lemon pepper mix at Publix and baked the mackerel up with some rice and mashed taters! Turned out pretty good!! Made sandwiches the next couple days just cold fish fillet and Mayo and they were dang good too!
