Violations of school covid policies
https://247sports.com/Article/Auburn-Bass-fishing-team-suspended-2022-163210735/Auburn’s bass fishing team has been suspended until 2022 due to violations of the university's COVID-19 policy regarding travel and events. These violations allegedly occurred in July 2020, February 2021 and March 2021.

There’s probably a heaping helping of pro-maskers applauding this asinine decision.

Re: Auburns fishing team suspended? - 03/28/21 08:19 PM
From what i’ve learned, its not just going maskless. They pretty much just told the adm to suck it and did what they wanted n went where they wanted. Admin warned them and they ignored. Wasnt just showing up at sponsored events maskless. And i get it...i’m in the same boat at work (pun intended).

This Covid chit has got to stop. Covid has all but disappeared. Don’t believe it? Check the news... rarely see anything.
The story some are telling is that Auburn shut down all the fishing club events due to covid, so some of the team members went to tournaments and fished as unaffiliated anglers. But they did it in their boats that had the Auburn wrap on them, so the administration decided they were representing Auburn and suspended the whole club. Does anyone know if this is the truth? If it is, the administrator who made the decision should be fired.

By that philosophy any student athlete with an Auburn sticker on their car or an Auburn T-shirt on could be subject to suspension if they are in public not following Auburn's covid policy. Somebody please post up some football, baseball, or basketball players with the school logo on not wearing masks. Bet they don't can the whole season for those groups...........
I will not ever attend another AU sports event.......

Well if they got suspended for taking their boat with an Auburn decal wrap and fishing another tournament, then I think every damn university vehicle with and AU on it should be parked and kept in a secure garage until this "COVID" bulldoodoo is officially declared over. And any other athlete who wore a jersey, or anything with an Auburn logo on it anywhere other than practice or game should be suspended as well. I am soo effing tired of all the just plain and simple STUPIDITY that has been going on everywhere.

They knew the rules, they broke the rules, they accept the consequences. That's called being a man. Babies complain about the rules or want the changed because they don't want to comply. I am sure their moms ran up to the school every time they didn't get their way. I am sure they are waiting on my mom and dad right now to get involved.

Re: Auburns fishing team suspended? - 03/29/21 09:54 PM
I agree with breaking the rules and paying the consequence by all means, and if that is the case then suspend the ones who participated, not cancel the entire season for the entire team. When a football player gets caught cheating, or breaks team rules, or does one of the hundreds of things we hear about them doing every day then that player is punished., not the entire season cancelled for the entire team. Also, I would question who actually "owns" said boat that supposedly had an auburn wrap on it? The student, or the university.

Maybe they applied some logic and common sense. I will not comply with nonsense rules that will not make any real difference. If we recall, it seems the entire state was on the lake fishing when we shut down. Why should these guys sit at home? These guys are probably more manly and should be applauded.

Its fishing, these kids can go to any lake they want anyday and fish
They can fish one of hundreds of tournaments a week. College fishing means 0 imo.
Just go fishing and move on boys

They should not sit at home if they don't want too. They are grown and know the rules. You just can't complain if you get caught and are disciplined. Man up Auburn Fishing Team

I agree if that is what happened, but what was posted on 247 was that they didn't break any rules. The Auburn fishing club was prohibited from fishing in events as a team, and they didn't. Individual members of the team participated in events as non-affiliated individuals. I would say that is their right as US citizens, and deciding to punish them solely because they still had the Auburn wraps on their boats is a blatant infringement of their rights, and whatever adult who decided they could be punished is way out of line.
But I don't really know if this is what really happened or not. I would have thought that someone here would know and would have confirmed it was all about a boat wrap if that were the case. Maybe there was more to it?

This biggest kicker for me is: were they informed they would be suspended if they fished these events. If they were, then man up. If not, shame on the school.

But how did the school think it had the right to tell them they couldn't participate in an event not connected to the school in any way? The fishing team was inactive and none of them claimed to be representing Auburn. At least, that's the way it is being presented. If that is right, what should be discussed right now is who gets fired for thinking he has that kind of power.

This is a complete guess and assumption. I "think" they have always been able to fish these tournaments. Dustin Connell used to fish tournaments on Mitchell when he was at Alabama. But due to Covid, the administration said no. The students thought well if we cover up Auburn then we good, but they assumed that was ok. Auburn decals was not the issue, they put these rules in place due to Covid. Again.. will wait on the facts but my guess.

Re: Auburns fishing team suspended? - 03/30/21 07:38 PM
IMO the only thing that AU has the ability to discipline or control these kids involvement in are school sanctioned tournaments. If they were fishing local tourneys on their own time, using their own boats which had AU wrap ( I dont think that AU bought a fleet of rangers for the team to use so it is probably safe to assume the boats are privately owned) then frak the AU person that made this call. Whomever it was, should be immediately fired. Only way that the wrap would even come into play was if it was an AU owned boat or AU paid $$ to those kids to put the wrap on their boats to advertise for the University. Neither of which, I'm sure, happened.

This was the reasoning for my question as to who "owned" the boats if having the AU wrap on it and fishing a tournament was the issue. I am like you and highly doubt AU bought and owned the boats. In that case, the kids were using their own personal property in a non university sanctioned tournament, so they have the right to use their own property to fish wherever they wanted.
I think it is certain that the kids were using their own boats, or at least boats that belonged to their families. I have no idea if Auburn provided the wraps, but I doubt it.
Looks like someone at the University decided that their position was probably not gonna hold up in court:

Yes. It is my understanding that they are not governed by the NCAA regs like FB, Bb, and BB. Basically they are just a club at the school and not considered a student athlete.

Who cares its fishing. Anyone can get on a team with minimal effort there is no athletic ability needed however all these kids seem to be able to afford these top of the line boats and trucks so money is obviously needed. They can literally fish a tournament a day everyday every week if they want to and can make whatever jersey or boat wrap or club they want and win money not scholarship stuff. Yall can guess what I think about highschool and college fishing teams

Re: Auburns fishing team suspended? - 03/31/21 09:42 PM
Some universities offer scholarships. Bethel University in Tennessee does, for example. Not all do.
Most do not, since these are club sports teams and not varsity teams. The Club teams may receive some money from student activity fees, but I don't know Auburn's situation with that. The club teams, to be officially sanctioned as reps of the university, have to abide by regulations and rules, can get disciplined and whatnot.

They were fishing as unaffiliated idot. Haven't heard anything about them complaining. Why would they want YOUR Mom and Dad to get involved? Everything I've heard whoever the Admin was that decided this needs to GO. They never had a warning, just they got an email telling they were suspended. I'm sure it's some deckhand admin who is over reaching for a Club sport.

Tigger85, did they receive any kind of "training" about virus protocols, anything formal in writing, anything at all sent to the club teams about "Do A, B, C and so forth" but "Don't do these things:" before all this? And the anglers or coach/advisor never were told anything was amiss before being suspended?

I am assuming they were notified of the rules and broke them, no warning is necessary. I never warned my son before I spanked him for breaking the rules,,,warnings are used by the weak and liberal parents who feed their kids pressed oat milk. It does appear Auburn is back stepping on this.. which points to the administration over reaching in the disciple which should be zero is the students were never notified of the rules..
