Puerto Rico offshore trip

Puerto Rico offshore trip - 10/09/19 04:16 PM

My future BIL requested a off shore fishing trip for his bachelor party. I told him since he lived there, for him to find the charter. Let's just say he went with the cheapest option. All day trip for mahi mahi. We leave the marina and go two hours out (38 miles) to the weed line. We start trolling and lose a big bull right at the boat. In the next hour we miss a bunch of small ones and load two into the cooler. The captain tells us we are moving to another spot in hopes of finding bigger fish. 15 minutes later he loses the starboard engine. We have to limp back to the marina at a whooping 7 mph on the port engine. Almost 5 hours. The worse part, we ran out of beer 2 hours away from port. The Coast Guard does not consider "out of beer" to be an emergency. We get back to the harbor entrance and SeaTow has to take us to his berth because of his lack of steering at idle speed. No refund, but he offered us a 50% discount on our next trip. Like we will ever be back to Puerto Rico in the foreseeable future.

Engine trouble happens to everyone. Happened to us on a very expensive charter on a high end Freeman out of Venice, LA, but it happened before we even made it to the fishing grounds and basically we lost our deposit of a few hundred bucks and not the whole cost. At least you did catch a few!

My condolences to anyone who has to visit that place.Never been personally but living in central Florida I am surrounded by previous residents. And that is not usually a positive thing.

I’ve lost one motor on a private 36’ yellowfin and had to limp in about 40 miles. Luckily we had already put about 300lbs of tuna in the boat, and we had trips.

Reminds me of a trip 25 years ago I was on a charter out of Venice, LA with a retired school teacher - turned "fisherman". Got stuck with this putz because the captain we chartered with was a no-show. Anyway, it was a flat-calm day in July and we were at the Midnight Lump in a 25' Make with twin 200's when one of the motors went tits-up. We were only able to make about 8 knots on the one engine. Okay then: 1 pm in the afternoon, good weather, plenty of gas, plenty of beer and we could just "high-speed" troll for wahoo as we limped back in - not what we had hope for, but that's life... "Point her north Captain, let's get going..." Well this idiot has other plans. Gets on the marine band emergency channel "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!" I tell the "Captain" - "Dude, are you stupid or something? What the hell did you just do? You know this situation does NOT warrant a Mayday call! Your better hope your good engine blows up quick."

About 1 minute later, the Coast Guard answers and they have an interesting discussion... Another nearby boat comes over and picks me and my buddies off the boat to give us a ride in - said "Captain Putzs" is gonna have a long rest of the day and night ahead of him once the Coast Guard locates him - and they didn't want us to be inconvenienced by the proceedings. (Pretty darned nice gesture on their part if you ask me!). Anyway, turns out "Captain Putz" ended up getting a hefty fine and lost his Captains license for a year over that call.
