Anyone going to throw swimbaits this spring? - 02/12/18 10:21 AM

Been doing research on catching big bass on swimbaits(soft). decided to try little critter trash fish. They are not as pricey as most and have great action. When trying to buy one to try, found no one has stock! seems I waited too long. I did find a website with the best selection of models(???) and they have stock. Just sharing info here.

I did it a lot for a couple of years then kind of lost Interest in it. Caught some really good fish while throwing the big money minnow

Threw it some but never really fell in love with the big money minnow. I felt that the tail on it was just a little too stiff for it to really have the action that I wanted. Just too thick as it transitioned down to the paddle tail. I do like the profile of the bait though. Perch, I'm honestly surprised you even brought this question up. You, of all people, should know better, big bass will not eat swimbaits.

If you watch the video's you'll see these have great action. The action is one thing I hate about saltwater swimbaits. since all saltwater fish have teeth, the lure companies make them tougher. It only results in killing all action and it comes thru the water like a stick.

I sold my bass boat this past fall, so doubt I’ll do as much fishing as I had been. I do have a crapload of swimbaits, though. A local store had a ton of them on sale for cheap back in the summer and I stocked up. I’ll be cleaning my garage out soon. I don’t mind sending you some to try out if you want. Me and Travis were pouring our own for a while, too.

I chunk hollow body paddetails all throughout the year, shallow, deep, and several different kinds, but I’ve found that the new zoom 5” paddle tail swimbaits have good action and are decently durable compared to other brands. Caught several gooduns on them in less than 3’ of water last week on Gantt lake here in Covington county.

What jig head do you use with the zoom?

The ways to rig one are endless. I also like them on chatter bait. Here are ways to rig as a swimbait.

1/4-1/2 jighead. Something with a retainer similar or like these.

I normally throw a belly weighted rig up shallow. 1/8 oz. you can fish it just like a spinnerbait, and if you pinch the hook point just under the skin on the back, it will come threw vegetation like it’s not there. On ledges I normally fish A dirty jig head or revenge jig head in 1/2 or 3/4 oz. Up shallow I like to fish it erratic like a swim jig, it causes the bait to almost look injured and like it’s trying to flee, they hit it very hard, and normally you see the fish hit it. I also like to swim it erratic out deep on ledges and have found that the swim bait gets better bites than the cranks or other baits I’m chunking, also helps to fire the school up. Meant to add to use a screw lock on the shallow rig up, saves a lot of headache from straitening the lure and you won’t lose as many when fighting fish. Also, up shallow I throw it on 40 to 50lb braid
