Produce from this weekend. Three kinds of lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, onions, and radishes.

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 04/07/14 02:52 PM

Sweet!

How do y'all eat chard? I just cleaned out all mine a couple weeks ago that was big from going all winter. We loved it...never had it before.

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 04/07/14 02:55 PM

Use the leaves like spinach and the stems like asparagus.

I haven't had it before until recently either.

You guys down south are killing me. My garden is covered in henbit and volunteer ryegrass. We got 3 1/2" of rain last night so I don't figure I'll be able to get in the garden for a while.

We'll find out soon. I just buried the neighbors in a big field down at the farm last month. It got rund over so the wife told my neighbor that ole Leroy won't mind taking to the country and give it a final resting place on a hill overlooking the creek.

We'll the dirt was softer in the big green field so if the coyotes didn't dig it up it will make good fertilizer in a month when I plant my peas.

I just bought this place at the first of the year, so I'm just now getting the garden spot ready. I still have a few crape myrtles to rip out of the ground on the edge, but the brush pile is already burned. I'm ready for some warm and dry weather so I can get some work done!

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 04/10/14 03:27 PM

got the better boys, cherry 100's, crook-kneck squash, carmen peppers, sweet banana, giant marconi peppers, cubanel peppers, jalepenos, blue lake bush beans, radishes, and yardlong beans, all in the dirt and growing up.

I may get adventurous and experiment with building a bamboo framed raised bed this weekend if I can scrap together enough spare parts to build another planter.

This is the third season on the first row to the left, the second season for the rest. I plant in the fall.

I got over 15 gallons off the first row last year. I water regular with drip irrigation.

Details man, details. What variety? How long are the rows? What else? I could definitely handle 15 gallons of blackberries. Do they have big seeds like some of the "tame" varieties I've had?
Posted By: coldtrail

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 04/10/14 09:12 PM

Those rows are 65 feet. 20 to 25 plants per row. I have every variety I can find. Arapaho, Navaho, Shawnee, triple crown and some I can't even remember. The ones on the first row are trailing type, you will make more berries with these but they take more time maintain. They grow every where.

I think I'm going to like the triple crown the best. They are semi erect.

I Set up a drip system and I only use cotton seed meal for fertilizer.

Thanks for the info. I would rather not have to have a trailing type, but 15 gallons of berries is a pretty good yield on a row that size I figure. Are your triple crowns mature enough to have fruit yet? If so, are they making good?

What about the seeds? We had one tame vine on a fence row on our farm and I ended up killing it. The berries were huge but I would spend a half a day picking seeds out of my teeth when I ate them. The seed were huge. Nothing like a wild blackberry.
Posted By: coldtrail

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 04/11/14 10:19 AM

I expect to get a good harvest from the triple crowns this year. I'll have to let your know. They are big sweet berries. I hadn't noticed the seeds on any of them being any bigger than regular wild ones. I don't eat as many fresh blackberries though as I do the blueberries.

My wife makes sauces, pies and I make wine with them.

She strains the seeds out and makes blackberry ice cream with whole milk. Its the best ice cream I've ever eaten.

Cover it with oak leaves every chance you get and till them in. I have been doing this in my garden for about 5 years. My soil here is pretty decent but its really starting to run dark and look great.

TC, you suck! Baby squash on 4/25...smh. I got my squash, and cukes transplanted. Tomatoes and peppers in the ground. 4 rows of corn planted, 2 rows of beans, 1 row of peas and a row of okra in the ground. Seed was swollen yestidy. Hope we don't get the 2" of rain they're talking about monday! My ground don't drain too good. Will prob add another row of okra and finish out my corn planting as soon as it dries next week.

All that looks good. I quit growing strawberries because of all the squirrels around my house. They would go out at daylight everyday and take one bite out of any berry that was turning red. Only got a few.

Yes I had pics on here of my setup. I still got stuff under them. Once they get big enough I put them outside for a week or so then transplant. I needed a few more a squash so there are some underIit now a few inches tall.

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 05/19/14 09:46 AM

I got a later start than most of you due to the wet weather this spring. Our prairie soil takes a while to dry enough to till and plant. I have tomatoes, several varieties of peppers, squash, okra, peas, watermelons and corn all planted and in various stages of growth. My fruit trees are also doing well this year.

TC are those purple maters any good to eat? I see you have some of that dang dollar weed also. I dug up some areas with it in there and literally sifted the ground to get roots and all out of it and the dang stuff still comes back.
Posted By: TChunter

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 05/19/14 09:30 PM

This is my first year trying them...I can't wait to put one on a sammich. The dollar weed is dead now...sprayed it but yes its aggravating. The long tube like roots are hell to get rid of.

Those purple maters are "indigo rose" fyi. Also have some Brandywine that are starting. I'll report back after I taste them. thumbup

Well I finally started putting seed in the ground yesterday. Hopefully I won't have such a late start next year, but between some house repair, deck building and work I couldn't get time to turn the soil until this week. Anyways here is my garden. Planted golden queen sweet corn, okra, squash, zucchini, and cucumber. Today I'm gonna put in beans, peas, bell peppers, and tomatoes. I plan on planting some pumpkins later in June.

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 06/05/14 02:31 PM

That is only 40 lbs. I have at least 225 lbs with the rest still in 5 gallon buckets. It came mostly out of 4 hives with a little bit coming from 2 other hives that are not producing much this year so far.

It was a good run if I say so myself as far as quality. Clear and light in color and very sweet.

Yup, thats some damn good food. Instead of white bread go for the gold and put that between two pieces of sour cornbread.

We had a slow start on our watermelons with the cold April but they are coming on now. We have several that should make it by the 4th.

That's a big watermelon patch! What variety you plant?

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 06/08/14 07:37 AM

We have not planted any in about 3 years so We planted about 2 acres this year. We planted mainly crimson sweat. We did plant a few of the shorter rows with some other varieties: sugar baby, star and moon, jubilee and 2 rows of yellow meat. We have gone back in the skips and planted cantaloupes.

What all have you done to keep that field so clean?
Posted By: Peanut Man

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 06/08/14 12:27 PM

I planted them on about a 10 X 8 spacing so we could disk in between them both ways. We will disk them one more time probably Tuesday and that will be it. I have sprayed roundup/2-4-d mix twice around the plants and spot sprayed the bad weed spots. I have also hoed around the plants a few times to get what the roundup missed but the roundup and disking got most of everything. They will get real weedy from here on out but that is ok. Now if i can just keep the deer and coyotes out. The deer have started coming and eating the ends off of some of the plants. I planted an acre of peas adjacent to them just to feed the deer. Maybe it will work.

Roundup is one thing, but if the root system of your garden plants grow into the area that you sprayed 2,4D then they're dead. I wouldn't walk by my garden with a sprayer of 2,4D.

Re: 2014 Garden pic thread! - 06/09/14 10:26 AM

I don't put much 2,4-D. Just enough to start to see the plant turn after about two days.

Mine is lighter than that picture makes it look. It will be a good bit darker if I get any off in July. Maybe in a few more weeks you'll have some darker in there and when you extract it will even out!

Thanks. Lowndes County black belt prairie soil, soaks up water like a sponge in the winter and hard as concrete in the summer!

No kiddin' I still earn my blackberries the old fashioned way. Every berry replaces the drops of blood I lose picking them.

Planted 3 different types of tomatoes this year, Hybrid Whopper, Beefmaster, Better Boy and Cherokee Purples. So far, this is best my 6 plants have ever done. Already picked over 20 there are a ton of new blooms coming on. Planted them two weeks before Good Friday. Four of the plants are over 8' tall already.

I have cow manure mixed in with my dirt but only used this organic fertilizer for tomatoes, other than that.

Muzziehead, you need to kill that snake in the bottom of the second pic. If it's not a snake it is looks like one enough to get shot. Fake one to keep birds away maybe?

Put that dark yellow knotty squash in the slop bucket for the hogs or feed it to the cows. (that's what I would do) It won't be fit to eat.
