weed control around fruit and nut trees? - 04/05/21 02:26 PM

Any herbicide or better recommendation for weed control around fruit and nut trees? I was thinking using the weed wiper on the 4 wheeler with 24d. That way I have no spray drift to worry about.

I wouldn’t use any 24-d around the trees. I spray gly around my trees and never had and damage to them.

I spray roundup around my apple and pear trees in my yard every year, twice. Blueberry bushes too. Just sprayed them last week. Grass is dead as a hammer right now.

Gly wont work for this. Im not just spraying around the base of the tree. For that i do use gly for.
Ive got about 2 acres of fruit and nut trees set on about 20 ft spacing. Its all that area i need to spray. The weeds are choking out what good grass i have in that area. Thats why i was thinking of using the wick wiper.

I spray the rows in my orchard with a boom sprayer. I only use the right side and only the last three nozzles. I have the boom bent about 30° on the end and the end nozzle sprays out some instead of straight down. I go down one side and then the other side. I have a 8'-10' strip under my trees dead. 10'-12' in the middles i leave alive. Bamaplowboy has an attachment for his tractor to do this but it extends from the middle of his tractor and has a curtain covering the boom. I just finished spraying my strips today. I used 2qts paraquat and 6oz valor per 55gal sprayer. One sprayer will spray around about 100 trees. In the fall, as soon as the leaves fall off, i will spray again with gly, goal xl, and prowl. This will keep the rows clean year around. Those are the mixtures recommended to me by Bamaplowboy and it has worked well. I dont know about using 24d right now, even on a wick wiper. The spray guide recommends spraying 24d 6-8 weeks before bloom, this would be well before any foliage is on the trees. That is for peach trees. I would assume other trees would be similar when dealing with 24d.

Not trying to keep everything dead in the rows. Just trying to take out the weeds and leave the grass. The weeds fast growth makes me have to mow twice as much as the area i have with almost no weeds. This area was farmed for years and then left to grow unkept for about 16 years. The soil from all the years of disking is very sandy and loose. Its on a slight slope and anywhere that gets bare will wash easily. In hindsight my first couple of years with the place i should have worked on getting the weeds under control before planting all the trees but, im not getting any younger and wanted them in the ground sooner rather than later.

This is a new 24d type that i was thinking of trying. Its less volatile and rated safe in fruit, nut , and berries.

Is there an issue with keeping it mowed? Too rough or too large an area? Constantly mowing will hold back weeds.

I dont live on this property yet. Probably a yr or more from building so its almost a every 10-12 days it needs mowed to keep it under control weed wise. The grass doesnt get bad but the weeds will be halfway to knee height. In turn it takes much longer to cut not to mention the drive time and hauling a mower back and forth.

Alion would be your best bet. It isn’t cheap, but is the best PRE on the market and is labeled for pecan, almonds, citrus, etc. It isn’t cheap, but does a great job.

Dang right it ain’t cheap, seems to linger in the soil profile too.
