Pumpkins - 01/14/21 10:33 AM

Good lord my wife is on my tail about planting a 3 or 4 acre pumpkin patch for the grandkids. We have 3 grandkids. I know the question why 3 or 4 acres. That will have to be taken up with the wife. She says she wants kids from all around to come get a pumpkin. Anywho my question is anyone can tell me when i need to plant and what kind of pumkins i need to plant for bigger ones. Yes i know its early just trying to get a head start. Thanks in advance

I get all my seeds from Rupp Seed Company. They have every pumpkin you can imagine. 3-4 acres is a lot. I planted 20 seeds from one called Knuckle Head and got over 60 pumpkins. I ran out of people to give them too. I also plant gourds called Autumn wings, Small palm size pumpkins called Jack b Quick and Casperita.
Little bigger 3 to 5 pound one called Touch of Autumn. And 3 different sizes of Indian Corn.

Rupp, Harris Seeds, Seedway offer good selections. Get varieties resistant/tolerant to powdery mildew. Iron Man is s good hard shell pie pumpkin, Gladiator is a good jack variety as are the ones mentioned above. Plant the last week of June for our area for a fall harvest. Plant the seeds 2 to a hill 3-4ft in row spacing with 5-6 between rows. Might leave some drive middles every few rows for easier harvest and spraying. Order seed NOW, it goes quick.

Like Bama mentioned spacing. Rupp has spacing guide on site to help. The big boys they want like 4-6 feet between seeds and 5 to 6 feet between rows. . I do 4 feet and plant 2 seeds then pull the little one when they come up. Smaller pumpkins are 1 to 2 feet. Pumpkins, gourds and Indian Corn are my favorite things to plant. I love Fall. Rupp also has free seed replacement. If something doesnt come up they will replace for free.

You or your wife, or both of you are gonna want to plant them before June, but don't plant them before June. You'll have half rotted pumpkins before Halloween if you do.

Its easy you will be fine. Biggest thing is you need to plan them so they get ripe at the same time. Big ones take longer so they will get planted first. Then you will plant the smaller ones according to how long they take.

Scroll down on this page it gives some great info.

Planted mine in July in an 1/8 acre area and we produced somewhere around 60 pumpkins. 3-4 acres is gonna be a CRAP LOAD of pumpkins 😂.

If you'll plant a wide variety of them you can sell the crap out of them on FB. One of the guys at the shop sold no telling how many hundreds of dollars worth last fall.

You got that right Fur. I had so many that I put a little box together. 10 gourds, 3 ears of Indian Corn, 1 small pumpki that was 3-5 lbs. I thought I would sell a few at school to these woman. I sold them for 15 bucks a box. I ended up sell 133 boxes and could of sold more if I would of had them. The more unusual the gourd, pumpkin or Indian Corn the more people want them.
